why didn't they just shoot the crane operator?

OMG a crane is lifting the criminal mastermind to the roof of a building, quick, run to the roof. Or, you know, one of you could go shoot the *beep* crane operator leaving the *beep* stranded fifty feet in the air and just wait for him to either shoot himself or surrender.

Because the crain was on the roof. Nobody on the ground would be able to see the cab, let alone have a shot.

Look, I'm not trolling here, but seriously: watch that scene again, the crane IS NOT ON THE ROOF. You can plainly see the arm of the crane originating from the bottom left of the screen and when the camera angle changes you can see the bottom half of the crane plain as day on the left hand side of the screen. You can even see the 'cockpit' where the crane operator had to have been sitting. That's why I had to come and put that post up. When I saw it I was like: "Why doesn't one of these idiots walk around that little billboard/fence and shoot the guy running the crane?" It's 'plot induced stupidity' at its absolute worst.

It is on netflix right now, if you go to about 17 minutes in or so you can see the crane right there on the left behind what looks to be some kind of makeshift fence. If you were meant to think the crane was on the roof then the cameraman did a terrible job of keeping the crane out of shot and the editor did a terrible job of cutting it out of the available footage.

Thanks for pointing that out. I missed the beginning part of the crane scene and after seeing your post I went back to review what I had missed. It clearly shows the crane base is at street level where the obvious - and easiest - choice to stop Cortez from ascending further would be to take out the crane operator. Instead, they continue to all fire at the van as it ascends and at the guy who is riding atop the magnet. All that accomplishes is to put the agents in the van at further risk and the driver does end up getting shot several times by the guy riding on top! That was really ridiculous and I don't know what purpose that served except to add some "excitement" for viewers who are only there to see how much gunfire and car chase scenes can be packed into the movie.

reply

You heard Forrest's character yell hold your fire. Then after the the guy in the van fell out onto the car and the gunshot from the person on top of the van that's when he told them to shoot.

reply

I don't know if you noticed. But the crane was operated remotely by a guy on the roof. You see him push a button and the magnet of the crane is lifted off at that moment

reply

I just sat down to watch this piece of crap and I had to put it on 'Pause' to get on-line and scream "how can the FBI allow themselves to be portrayed as complete imbeciles?"

In the first four minutes of "FBI action", I counted at least a dozen screwups ... I'm sure the real cops are livid at being portrayed as poorly trained, slow idiots.

How does such garbage get filmed?

reply

Okay, I went back and hit the 'Resume" button ... only to sit through 8 minutes of the horrible, atrocious "acting" of Forest Whitaker ... oh, is he awful, awful, awful.

That's it for me.

If you stop now, you won't see the bulletproof, crashproof, invisible Corvette.

I just came on here to bitch about this exact point. Just starting laughing when I saw it.

reply

When watching I asked that exact question... however I would like to point out that when the van is placed on the roof we clearly see a guy holding a remote control who has been operating the crane. So despite its many ludicrous plot holes, this one was actually addressed.

reply

That makes more sense, but the fact that absolutely no one even makes a move for the crane's cockpit just appears ludicrous.

reply

Is the crane operator armed? Law enforcement can't just shoot an unarmed person that is not posing an immediate threat of danger to another individual or the police.

reply

yes maybe, but this does not mean they can not remove the crane operator, there are other ways to eliminate him like a punch in the face or tasers lmfao

reply

What happened to the woman who was shooting at the cops from the top of the magnet? I'm sure that wasn't the Agent he fake-kidnapped. I was expecting her and Jaimie Alexander to eventually fight, but that character just vanished.

because this is one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen, that's why

reply

...and how exactly are they supposed to pin-point where the person controlling the crane is considering it was a REMOTE CONTROLLED crane?
