The Chopper and Corvette chase...

In the scene where the Police chopper is chasing the Corvette, we see the chopper losing the Corvette when the car lights went off.

Aren't Police choppers supposed to have infrared detection equipment, which picks up anything with heat?

reply

In a strange twist of events, it was the Corvette that had the nightvision...

Exactly, how ironic. (and dumb)

reply

Yeah I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw that scene. I think it' just basically them adding to the drama - I mean you have this very fast car that came in with a backup plan to avoid being chased by the chopper.

and which direction does the chopper - chasing a 150+ mph corvette - go?

As soon as the lights go out, the corvette changes direction. There's no way the chopper would locate him.

reply

With infrared night vision it would.

reply

lol they should've just kept going down the highway... there's no other direction the 'Vette could've possibly gone (unless he wanted to drive on the arid land).

yeah, that was the best part

they lost him.....

......on a perfectly straight two lane highway in the middle of the desert......

apparently it never occured to them to pivot the search light a few degrees up and just scan down the highway

I'm sure a 1000hp Corvette could outrun most choppers...

Strange that the
1000 hp vette never stops for gas...

reply

What makes you think the vette was running on gas. the damn vette had a front hood as strong as a tank. the vette def was fueled by air and had some nitro for an extra boost.

reply

A full tank of Fuel could've made it from Vegas to Arizona me thinks.

With that agressive driving style and 1000 hp? Nope.

Which of my messages are you replying to?

Wait, so you think a Corvette is likely to escape a helicopter? lol

reply

No just any Corvette, but a juiced-up-to-the-max 1000hp one surely would.

Guess they should've sent a fighter jet. You know, I really like the director's other films. But I just don't think I should give the movie a chance. I don't think that, if I watch it, I will like it. At all.

Well if they needed a VTOL aircraft to chase it, they should have sent an F-35.

reply

Because I didn't believe this myself I looked it up
The fastest speed record for a chopper is 220mph
If this car actually was 1000HP + Nitro, it'd easily outpace a standard FBI chopper.

Perhaps the laziest moment in a screenplay chock full of 'em.

I'm surprised that CHP didn't involve themselves, after all, US95 goes through California before it enters Arizona.

reply

Well there you go - a chopper can go 175mph - the model of Corvette in this movie has a stock top speed of 190mph - so a modified one would have no problem out-running a chopper!

No, it has a top speed of 205MPH. This was one that did not have the stock HP, aka 638HP, but instead, was boosted to about 1000RWHP, so around 1070 to 1140 @ the crank. + A modified body, sucker can for damn sure out-run any Chopper, stock, and ten-fold modified.

reply

yeah, not to mention not one cop thought to lay down road spikes, or set up a blockade with something so heavy a truck wouldn't get through it all?

reply

Well the chopper in question isn't an Apache or Cobra. It's an old Huey. They cruise at about 110 knots or about 126mph. The top speed isn't much faster than that. So yeah, in a straight line a tricked out ZR1 could seriously out run one. But for how long? At close to it's top speed a super car like the ZR1 would run out of fuel in less than an hour. So honestly, this chase isn't realistic at all. But whatever, why nitpick that ONE thing out of this whole movie? lol

"Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!"

reply

My question is: If the Vette can outrun the helicopter, or travel at speeds close to or in excess of 200mph, how did the sheriff keep up with him in that Camaro?

reply

[deleted]

It wouldn't normally - the corn field would've played a part in that.

Not only that, but why was the chopper practically parked on top of the car?

I would assume that US police choppers are at least as well equipped as British ones (if not moreso) and our police choppers have cameras that can zoom in over a few miles, as well as having infrared. The chopper should have been high up, with a wide view of the landscape.

There's no way braking a bit and turning off the headlights would confound a police chopper!

reply

Don't see how it would help. 205MPH top-speed, stock, and this was one pushing almost double the HP. Normal chopper speed for pursuit is max 160-170, this thing would ghost them for sure, even stock, let alone upgraded from 638HP to 1000+HP.
