So she kills his whole family...

And he doesn't know what she looks like? He never had to show up in court, never picked up a newspaper, turned on the TV, nothing? Because I'm pretty sure a star student wiping out an entire family on graduation night after being accepted to MIT would have made national headlines.

reply

It was explained in the movie that he was in a coma during her court proceedings and chose not to know who she was upon waking

reply

Just as it was explained that since she was a minor at the time her name was not made public.

Misread, sorry

I'm not buying that part. This would have been a media sensation, there's no way they would have been able to keep her name private, especially in a community that small.

reply

how was this to be a media sensation? how many incidents similar to this occur in the news every day? sad as it is, it's back page news. sure, it looks as if John was a composer/conductor of some note, but it's not clear if he's just a local celeb in the already slightly marginal world of classical music (he's no Belieber!).

he also mentions that his brother confiscated all the records in order to prevent John from going ballistic. chances are good that his brother did a bit more in sheltering him from the media (check out his house! he's living in a very intentionally isolated fashion; he clearly knows he shouldn't know certain details about the girl that did this to him).

However, she would not be a "felon" if she was tried as a minor, since her record would be sealed at age 21, when she left "jail".

reply

my question in regards to this is: in real life, would anyone get only 5 years for killing people while DUI?
it seems like not so harsh punishment. if it had been an accident, but she was drunk.

I'm so happy, 'cause today I found my friends. they're in my head...

reply

She's a pretty white girl, dude. The "Affluenza" kid did this in real life and only got probation.

Far greater travesties have happened, usually (but not always) for female murderers.
One lady stabbed her father to death, attacked the paramedics who came to help him and screamed "I hope he dies". She got "time served" and walked out of the courtroom, free. Well, probation, but free enough!
Add to that the under age factor and 4 years seems like a highly believable sentence. Actually 8 years and "out in 4" eh? If she were sentenced to 4, she'd likely be out in 2 or less.

reply

the amount of her jail time is completely irrelevant to the story; that's nitpicking needlessly.

reply

Any minor in Brazil rarely spend a day locked... (in fact, if an officer books one minor, the minor get out before the officer finnish the papers...)

reply

Ever heard of a spoiler?

reply

lol a story like that would not have been as popular as you seem to think it'd be.

reply

I was in a car accident that killed a woman in another car, and killed my fiancée. I know the name of the truck driver that caused their deaths, but I never knew what she looked like. The only pictures in the news paper were pictures of smashed up cars.

reply

{{{ hugs to you }}} i'm so sorry to hear that happened to your fiancee.

reply

but did you end up sleeping with her after she cleaned your house?
