Eventually both Earths will collide killing everybody.

so it doesn't really matter who died on what planet or who gave who a ticket. The Earths are approaching each other rapidly. Doom is inevitable!

I think the apparent approach of the planets was intended as symbolic rather than real: as they learned more about one another and grew in each other's populations' consciousnesses, this was visually represented by the increasing size and clarity of Earth 2. I don't think this was a story about an inevitable apocalypse.

That's how I took it, too.

If two Earth sized planets got as close as depicted, the gravitational forces would have ripped them both apart.

The Moon could end up as a tiny planet with a huge ring!

I agree. Adding that the entire reward was the possibility that IF the ticket-holder could be changed, then maybe his wife and kids are still alive.

However, he is a copy of Earth 2's him. And technically an alien.

Enjoy these words, for one day they'll be gone... All of them.
