Only kids locked up for two years with no social interaction would think smiles are scary.

Smiles were always creepy. The reason why predators smile showing their teeth is to show their superiority to others.

I am only surprised smiles haven't been used like this so explicitly before.

It was very well done.
The director apparently asked the actors to keep their eyes static when they smiled, to get the predatory effect

Unpredictable things, changes in people are scary. Like a hysteric person suddenly seen with staring eyes and a weird smile.

I found this very creepy -scary and I am not a kid nor have I been locked up for 2 yrs
