The cult did to ensure they were not at home to break in and leave the message for Mae.
It also becomes apparent that some of these cult members knew where Mae was staying. They had been watching her all along. If they wanted to they could have abducted her. They did have a chance to do so. Which makes me wonder why. Or was it because they wanted her to come back willingly of her own will?
