Assuming ...

Assuming John Moon died would be wrong to do. Agreed? With some people saying the ending was ridiculous in that he did from his finger being chopped off well who is to say he did die? I am beginning to lean towards him not having died. Does anyone know what it says happens in the book? Better yet anyone want to post word for word the book ending and I can judge for myself and others can too?

I came away with the impression Moon eventually died from a combination of blood loss and exhaustion making him unable to crawl out of the hole. Also, I see no away he was going to get away with the crimes he committed. Killing someone while poaching is pretty serious. Also he would likely be accused of killing the guy in the hotel room since the clerk could easily finger him as a man looking for the victim and had access to the room near the time of death.

"He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator."

I agree with you, and not just because you're a fellow Devils fan. 

It's interesting that when an ending (or any other part of a film) is intentionally left relatively wide open to interpretation that a lot of folks are uncomfortable with the ambiguity and so they pick a particular interpretation and they dogmatically stick with it.
