Deer hunting with a shotgun?
I understand if he was in a deerstand (tree), but not for a stalk and hunt.

shareWould of had to use rifle slug, but the county I live in right now you actually have to use shotgun with rifle slug…not that I would if i didn't have to though.
shareIt can be done. Rifled slugs in a rifled barrel are very accurate. The range limitation isn't a problem in dense forest like in the film. But nobody should be running around the woods blasting all over and expect to hit a deer.

I've got a Remington 870 pump with rifle sights on it, and I have used it to hunt deer (with slugs), so what was used in the film could have been a shotgun. I don't remember well enough. I only remember thinking at the time that it was, but I wasn't paying close attention.

He's poaching deer with a slug shotgun. He even acknowledges the fact when asked by Simon, "You still huntin' with them deer slugs, Johnno?"
shareHe liked to use deer slugs.
shareProbably rifled slugs. But even so, there's a reason it's called buckshot.
shareIt is very common to use a shotgun for deer, in many states and counties with higher populations you can only use a shotgun or muzzleloader for deer because of its limited range for safety over a high powered rifle. Slugs whether rifled or sabot are very lethal on deer, buckshot is also used, and in rare cases pumpkin balls. In the dense woods most people use a shotgun or short range rifle like a 30-30 or 44 magnum for deer as well as a muzzleloader or bow and arrow. Almost every pump action shotgun offers a deer hunting barrel with a rifled barrel and rifle sights as well as a scope mount.

Its accurate enough with slugs. The fact that he was poaching would make the use of a shotgun less obvious since he mentioned that he was pheasant hunting during later conversation.
