Questions

I was sure simons character was played by James Franco's brother, I came here to check out who he was and I was wrong. I'm confused about the vampire bite because they didn't bring it up again but I imagine they will touch in that in future books.

Why did hodge all of a sudden change his mind?

Why would the mom give the cup to that witch? she should have known she was a demon?

How did she know to draw that ruin on her hand to keep away the demons? No one else seemed to know anything about it.

Hi, my advice = read the books. They include so much more detail than the movie and most of your questions are answered within them. However, if you're not planning to read the books, here are some answers. Hope they help. You really should read the books though, they're fun.

-Simon's vampire bite: yeah it seemed ridiculous in the movie that Clary notices a vamp bite on her best friend but then decides not to mention it to anyone. "Oh, he was bitten by a vampire? Yeah, he'll be juuust fine." It does become very important in the following books. The filmmakers were already planning on making the sequel "City of Ashes," so undoubtedly Simon's vamp bite would have been addressed then. Too bad the sequel is looking less and less likely.

Why did hodge all of a sudden change his mind?

You mean the scene where he opens the glass roof to let the demons in, and then later he helps Isabelle & Simon close it? Hodge changed his mind in the movie presumably because he couldn't stand what Valentine was doing/going to do. Book Hodge is a little more complicated than movie Hodge. He may be a selfish betrayer, but he's not eeevil. Whether he's good or bad remains a little more ambivalent until the 3rd book (I think it's in the 3rd book). In the movie it's Hodge's idea to lie to Clary & Jace about Valentine being their father; in the book it's not Hodge & it's more complicated.
Why would the mom give the cup to that witch? she should have known she was a demon?

The witch (Madame Dorothea) is not a demon to begin with; she later becomes possessed by one. Remember, after he kills that dog-demon, Jace tells Clary that demons can take possession of anyone. In the book Dorothea is a little more important; Clary's mother (who doesn't want Valentine to find her, but especially doesn't want Valentine to find her with the Cup) trusts the witch enough to give her the tarot cards, but I'm pretty sure Dorothea didn't know the Mortal Cup was inside one of the cards.
How did she know to draw that ruin on her hand to keep away the demons?

This is also something that would have been picked up in the next movie. If you want to know the answer, read the books. Or, I can give you a SPOILER: in the books, starting with the 2nd one, Clary has the ability to create her own runes. She has visions of some runes that don't exist yet and others that are ancient and not set down in any book. Her ability is the result of something super special in her blood (that's putting it mildly). The Shadowhunters use runes that come from the Gray Book; you see Clary studying it in the movie and Isabelle mentions it as well. But the rune that Clary creates in the scene you mentioned is a rune entirely of her own making. It comes in very handy, as you may imagine. What's most hilarious about this scene, however, is the fact that Clary draws a rune that freezes the demons in their tracks and then all the bad-ass werewolves and Shadowhunters gingerly pick their way through the frozen demons like "Oh dear, we don't want to disturb the little darlings!" "Yeah, we'll just deal with these bad boys later when they unfreeze cuz that makes soooo much more sense than just killing them while they're frozen!" What's sad is that it was a cool effect, and then it was ruined by having the characters do something incredibly dumb and inefficient. Ok, rant over.

Hope these answers helped clear some things up. And (if I haven't said it enough), I hope you read the books.

Thanks! I figured my questions would have been clear in the books.

I admit I didn't read your spoiler because I plan to read the books. The movie was ok, but I've heard the books were good. I loved hunger games, divergent and delirium series too.

I'm glad to hear you'll be reading the books! They really do provide a richer experience than the movie did. The movie was good and bad, but it was a good introduction to the Shadowhunter world. It was intriguing enough to make me want to read the books and now I'm totally obsessed.
Happy reading

Something you may not have noticed in the movie that wasn't picked up by the goofs is that the rune that Clary draws to freeze the demons is tattooed on Valentines chest. That's just in the movie.
