how did they mess up the movie adaptation so badly?

The books were so so (I can't stand love triangles, vampires and werewolves....they killed those genre so I nvr liked those parts in the book) but dear god the movie was just so bad. Did they not think it would be so poorly orchestrated just from reading the screenplay?

I liked it. I had never read the books despite owning them (they were a gift) and had seen ads for the movie and rejected it because it didn't look like something I would enjoy. Then I happened to watch it when it came on TV...and proceeded to spend the next two weeks reading the books, then watched the movie again.

The only part of the movie I don't like is the way Jace killed the demons in the apartment (in the beginning, and then later when they went to get the cup) instead of Clary and Simon, but even that only annoyed me the second time. The first time I just figured he was the heroic one.

Then again...I love vampires and werewolves and triangles. I'm not surprised that someone who doesn't isn't fond of this movie, let alone the series. It's angels and demons and wars between good and evil I'm generally not fond of, which is why I didn't realise how much I'd like it until I actually saw the movie.

Worst. Rescue. EVER!

Oh I ove werewolves, vampires, etc. I enjoyed the Trueblood books (and the show until season 2) but hey have been written to death.

I think if you read the books first and then saw the movie you may not have been too happy. Now, I understand movies aren't always as good as the books but this was an entirely different monster

I read COB around the time the film was in pre-production/almost production phase. I did not re-read the book before I saw the film. However, I can say that most of the important moments from the book I recalled were in the film. Of course characters were added or subtracted from moments, and the final event on Renwick happened at the Institute (that I could understand for budgeting reasons--why have a different set made when you can use one you already have and it makes sense given Hodge working for Valentine?) Yeah, I know even then it wasn't accurate… And then I re-read the book. On a scale of 1-10 for at least telling the story and its overall execution 6.5-7.

I think it is impossible to fit all elements in the books into a 2 hour movie format. That is apparently, why it took over 20 years for Diana Gabaldon to agree to an adaptation for her Outlander series. She has said you couldn't fit one of her 800 page novels into a 2 hour film, but 16 episodes per book on Starz has worked perfectly. I think this format will work well for The Mortal Instruments, because if you're a fan of the books you want to see as much of it as possible when it's filmed. It's funny, but I saw TMI with someone who hadn't read the books but enjoyed the movie because she wasn't comparing it to the book like I was.

These books are not as good as people claiming them to be. She is not a good writer. I got so tired of "Jace don't " or "Clary don't". They are poorly written.

Still, Clare tells a decent story but her writing does leave a lot to be desired.

I would always rather be happy than dignified. 😁
