There's no mention of them having accents in the books. I think the movie just did that because a number of the actors are English and English accents are dead sexy. Also, the Shadowhunters having English accents sets them apart from, and dare I say above, the mundanes. Ever notice how many ancient Romans, villains, aliens have English accents? Anything exotic or abnormal has some kind of accent. And, in the books the Shadowhunter homeland is a country named Idris and is located sort of in the middle of Europe. It makes sense that they would have some kind of accent. All that being said, the guy who plays Simon (Robert Sheehan) has a killer Irish accent, and his American accent in the movie is flawless. I hope you continue to read the books, they get a little deeper and darker, and the last book is a really good ending for this set of Shadowhunters.
