Question for book readers
Haven't read the books myself and have just finished watching the tv series and the movie. Noticed there are quite a few differences between the tv series and the movie, which one is closer to the books?

shareBoth the TV show and the movie stray from the books in different ways. The movie didn't have enough time to squeeze in a lot of the details from the books, and the show picks up a lot of the slack in that regard. But I prefer the mood & overall feel of the movie. I think the TV show is a lil bit closer to the books, even though it has changed some details & has rushed some of the plotlines. For example, the Institute in the show is all high-tech with lots of people around doing things with computers, etc., whereas the Institute in the movie is much more book accurate--it should be empty & lonely, almost a place of exile, and the tech the Shadowhunters use is closer to a mixture of steampunk gadgetry & magic. Also, the show rushed Simon's Turning into a vampire, which happens in book 2.
Anyway, you should read the books--they're light fun & it would be good for filling in the gaps in the movie & show.

The writers of the TV show took some from Book 1 and some from Book 2...13 episodes needed some filler...and they have 6 books to work with..really book 2 took 3/4 of the time on Valentine's boat..fast reading, but only needed a few scenes..
I would have preferred the movie, if we got a chance for at least 4 more..they did try to rush too much into 1 movie.
And, I like the way we see more of the main characters in the TV show...Alec and Izzy were very much under used in the movie.
The movie omitted so many things for obvious reasons. But the tv series changed so many things. Why bother making it if it ain't true to the books. Ffs.
