Just scale down with rope slung around the pole.
Make a harness so you couldn't fall and it's easy-peasy. They had 50ft of rope, enough for both

shareI thought of that as well….but with the friction from that rusty pole, they probably wouldn’t make it 100 feet before their ropes broke. Plus, they were exhausted.
shareClimbing rope is pretty tough and what's the alternative?
shareI think that was essentially the point of the movie and their dilemma.
It was unwinnable. There were zero good, feasible options.
I mean....they could TRY to shimmy down that pole using the rope....but it would have failed.
Still, probably better than jumping or getting eaten by vultures, I suppose.

"I mean....they could TRY to shimmy down that pole using the rope....but it would have failed." -You dont know that. You'd be amazed of what incredible feats of strenght and endurance people can muster in order to stay alive.
shareClimbing ropes are made to survive friction like that.
shareCouldn't they hold hands around the pole and abseil / walk their way slowly down?
shareThe pole is wider around than you may think. It seemed too wide for their hands to meet. And even if they COULD reach each other's hands....they were exhausted, and thousands of feet up. Between the sheer fatigue factor....and sweat....and muscle cramping.....hunger....dehydration....muscle fatigue......the abrasiveness of having your arms and legs wrapped around a rusty pole, etc.......they would not have made it even 50 feet. (And that's assuming the pole had no obstacles in their path the entire way down, which it actually did have). Their were those satellite dishes in the way....cables running across their path at certain points, etc.
Try this.....try finding a monkey bars at a playground, and go hang by your arms for even 3 minutes, and see if you can last before the fatigue in your muscles causes you to loose your grip. Now.....try that at 2,000 ft in the air....in the wind....scared sh_tless....already exhausted from the climb up......sweaty hands.....etc, etc......
People, it's natural to grasp at straws and try to come up with solutions, no matter how ridiculous. But the whole premise of the movie was....their wasn't a solution. THAT....is what made the movie compelling. Sometimes there simply is no feasible solution.
I'd need to rewatch the trailer but I thought that top bit pole wasn't too wide for them to wrap arms around?
Wasn't there a wider platform a bit further down as well? I thought they just had maybe a couple hundred feet or so of pole to get down until they reached the frame like section we see them going up to start with...
It wouldn't be the same as that fairground hanging example either as they'd supporting weight on the pole as well with their feet - not sure precisely how the angular momentum physics for that would work but they'd be walking bouncing / abseiling down at the same time, so less energy used by far.
Not saying it'd be a certainty to work but hey, what the heck, if you're going to die anyway give it a go.
It is an interesting premise though!
I was thinking the same while watching the movie but that isn't even mentioned by girls. Also movie established to Hunter is hot headed, Becky is out of all those climbing stuff. And to be clear, in those situation brain simply refuses to work. They're stuck at 600m high on small platform, it is unwinnable.
shareI’m trying to understand what you’re suggesting. Are you saying they should wrap the rope around the pole, attach themselves to the rope, and then go downwards?
I think there are issues regarding the friction around the pole. Their combined weights might have broken it
If you want to elevate your heads or legs, similar to an astronaut in space?
shareWhat about the satellite dish (i.e. where the blonde girl's corpse laid).
If they follow your suggestion, what do they do when they reach the satellite dish? They would have to untie the rope from the pole, sit / stand on the satellite dish, and then find a way to tie the rope around the pole underneath the satellite dish (which I don't think is possible)
The problem is how do you sling it around the pole from the platform they were standing on? They both would have to be standing beneath it in order to wrap it around and that was just physically impossible.
shareThey could both climb my pole
