Seeking a non-cultural cringe assessment of this film

...I'm not interested in hearing from any Australians who are just going to bag the film because they can't deal with their cultural cringe, or Brits who hate our guts (or any other person who hates our guts for that matter). Only people who can give an honest and non-biased assessment of this film.

Thank you.

What makes you think Brits dislike Aussies? It's Americans and the French, us Brits usually can't stand.

I thought it was pretty good for Patrick Hughe's first attempt at directing a feature long movie. I mean, look where it got him, he's doing Expendables 3.

The characters are down to earth (and not as dumb as some Aussies tend to believe), by that I mean they aren't over the top action heroes, they're just plain people dealing with a stressful situation. If anyone thinks they were acting dumb doing things no one would ever do in a similar situation (like a comment I read about the old guy emptying his gun and not hitting anything), then they haven't a clue as to what real life is like, and I'd like to see how they would react in a situation like that. The dude was scared sh!tless and in fear for his life and wasn't the type who'd be out target practicing with a shotgun. Ever watch the end of Unforgiven? One man within pointblank range of at least 10 experienced men with pistols, but when the sh!t went down, no one hit their target because the adrenaline was high and everyone was focusing on avoiding getting shot and not hitting the target.

Anyway, I liked it. It could have done without the black panther, but in general, I thought it was more entertaining than most blockbuster summer movies such as GI Joe or Transformers. I'll take a good low budget entertaining movie over a blockbuster sh!tty one any day. And I hope he brings some of that gritty realism to the Expendables franchise.

I enjoyed Red Hill. It was as good as most (most, obviously not all) movies I have seen out of Hollywood in recent years (especially among the low budget ones).

Only an idiot watching this movie would think it represents all of Australia.

At first, the black panther seemed irrelevant to the plot. But, upon reflection, I suppose it gave a reason for Shane to initially meet Gleason, find out where his farm was, that he had a satellite radio, learn how to handle the horse, etc.

Thanks, very helpful.

Pros:
-Great atmosphere and beautiful locale
-Some decent performances
-Predictable but likable twist with the antagonist

Cons:
-Some major Western cliche's and silly dialogue
-Panther subplot was meaningless and distracting
-Action scenes weren't that great

A review from a horrible, hateful Septic Yank. I like the director though.
