Shot at five times from 10 yards and all the buillets missed?

This flm was confused between the idea of making a realistic thriller like...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060255/
but made the mistake of relying upon outlandish occurances to turn the plot upon.
One particularly outrageous and annoying incident was when Benny was shot at from close distance and all the bullets missed. Very groan inducing.
Otherwise, it was a competent and watchable film.

For me this was the most believable scene of the movie.
As for the rest: Keystone Cops.

I am only surprised that you have all missed the obvious.
Has no one heard of Ned Kelly?
Check 131.10 minutes into the movie.
I believe I saw what looked like body armour.
Quite an obvious choice of protection knowing where you are going and what you plan to do.
Excellent stuff. Will watch it again tonight!

Someone mentioned "High Plains Drifter" earlier and I think that is leading us towards the right direction. This is not a realistic movie, nor is it intended to be. Jimmy is like a spirit of vengeance, unstoppable and not quite human (or more than human). He is closer to Javier Bardem's unstoppable killer in "No Country For Old Men" than any 'normal' character.

That scene DID take me out of the film for a second, but when you consider Jimmy's other feats and the appearances of the panther, I think it's safe to say that strict realism waasn't what the film was aiming for.

Slim had likely never shot a gun before, certainly not ever at a human being. He was delirious with fear, bleeding heavily, and still reeling from smashing his car in an attempt to run down Jimmy. If you don't know how to use a gun, it's difficult to shoot accurately even under ideal conditions. These were blindingly un-ideal conditions.

There are a lot of scenes in the film that require you to suspend your disbelief, but westerns often feature gunslingers that accomplish nearly superhuman feats with a pistol. The Man With No Name trilogy comprises three of the most famous and lauded westerns of all time, and all three of those films are filled to the brim with unrealistic action sequences and superhuman trick shots. There's nothing this film is asking you to accept that you haven't accepted in dozens of other films in the genre.

I get what you're saying, dingdongdenny, but as we see the weapons being handed out earlier on, the fella who fired at Jimmy was very nervous looking about having to take a gun, which could indicate that he was not used to firing/using one. It's also a fair point to note that a pistol, having a short barrel, makes it very difficult to actually hit a target at anything more than say 20 feet. One millimeter out on the pistol end could mean one METER out at target end. The movies (including this one, as Jimmy shoots the guy off the roof with HIS pistol) all too often have amazing shots over long distance, but in real life, a scared and nervous (not to mention newly injured man) who wasn't aiming properly as he wasn't (more waving it about), could easily miss a standing target with all six rounds at ten yards... (30 feet!!) You have to be a good pistol shot at that range, using both hands to hit target... I thought that bit was fairly realistic. Comedic too the way it was filmed.

I found it more unbelievable how Jimmy, who's been in jail for 15 years and was NOT a murderer, is so skilled at both shooting (aiming, response) as well as killing people (no remorse, stealth tactics). Yes I know he was framed, this explains the latter sortof. But he just got out of jail, don't you need shooting practices then?

Funnily enough, though this isn't my type of movie, I found it highly entertaining. Perhaps because it isn't my thing, that I don't have references, or less expectations. Or perhaps it was because it was set in Australia. It wasn't because of Claire van der Boom. She had a small role,

Possible, which is why you should have at least a couple of 15+ round magazines, but the unbelievable part is how the magical black fellow just stands there.

reply

Agreed. I've never shot a gun in my life and I'm willing to bet I could hit him with at least 1 bullet from about ten yards away...with my eyes closed.

It's been a couple years since I watched the movie so bear with me;

Yeah, this scene seemed to give the movie an almost supernatural feel.
But of course, nothing else in the movie was suggested to be supernatural. So even if they wanted to imply that he couldn't hit Jimmy with 6 shots, which is entirely plausible, they could have at least shown the bullets hitting other things. (maybe God came down from heaven and stopped the bullets? lol) But Jimmy just stood there and let the shots go off. Another ridiculous part is when Jimmy just spun around and one-shotted a guy hiding on a roof top with a hand gun from 100 or more feet away.

Now, I'm hazy on the backstory with Shane. Was it that he killed someone in the line of duty and couldn't bring himself to draw his gun again? Or was it that he couldn't bring himself to draw his gun and got shot?
The part that kind of took me out of the film was when Jimmy and Shane face off for the first time. Shane had the drop on Jimmy, but Shane puts his gun down and when Jimmy racked his shotgun, Shane panicked and fell down the hill.
Nobody in their right mind would put their gun away when facing a suspect who is armed and known to be dangerous, not to mention when there were innocents right there. These are just things that a real person wouldn't do. Even with his backstory (especially if it was the latter one).

If you don't know who I am. Then maybe the best course would be to tread lightly.

Cooper got shot at his previous assignment. He was confronted by a juvenile with a gun and was unable to shoot the kid. The kid had no problem pulling the trigger.

Having been a police officer for the past thirteen years that should have been a clue for Cooper that perhaps he wasn't cut out for police work.

There is no way a police officer would put down his gun when confronted by an escaped prisoner/convicted murderer who is armed and has taken two elderly people hostage. Please.

But then again if it had been me I would have driven over to my house and got my revolver (I wouldn't have knowingly gone to work without it by the way) before going up to my post.

The movie was very very weak when it came to it's depiction of tactics.
