It should have been a masterpiece...

I am an admirer of Villeneuve movies.
The direction, cinematography, mood, the long thoughtful pauses, poignant scores, layered characters and enticing narrative. And in Dune thats mostly what you get.
The problem is that in Dune, the story takes a back seat to the spectacle and the screenplay gets crushed under the weight of the complex source material.
With both movies i was left with a kind of emptiness like "yes that was cool, but kind of shallow too". In comparison, Godzilla Minus One was such a full and well rounded cinematic experience.

I felt that way too, as well as feeling cheated. It's almost like he was trying as hard as he could not to imitate the previous Dune films, as well as trying not to imitate Star Wars, and failed miserably outside of his big, fantastic spacecraft and battle scenes.

Yes, I think it would have made more sense as a high quality TV series. The story is too long and complex to be crammed into few movies.

This, and I can say the miniseries was better at following the book.

Yeah, a lot is missing from the books.

He got the main ideas but not all the intricacies ... which is not so easy to transpose in a movie.
