the excessive spin-offs

Honestly I think there's a few main reasons for it. It's not that WD is so popular as it isn't anymore. But it still has potential. Because possible zombie stories are endless. And with ending the parent show, they do away with any last vestige of pressure of being beholden to the original source material. I know they were always loose with it anyway, but now it all gets to be their own thing completely. A whole new world... beyond, if you will ;)

I'd actually really respect it if all the spin-offs weren't happening and their announcements were red herrings to lull us into a false sense of security and be more surprised.

But I doubt it. They insist on making the franchise live up to its name.

Yeah, they may not be bound by the source material, but rest assured all these spin-offs are going to follow the same tired lather-rinse-repeat formula of the last few years:endless conflict with various antagonistic groups/villains, with zombies as occasional threats.

Unless they try to do something really different. Which I seriously doubt.

I don't mind them, and I'm actually looking forward to the Negan and Maggie spinoff. If they suck, they suck. No ones forcing me, or anyone else, to watch them.

The source material has ended and the show has already killed off some of the important characters that survive to the end...so they don't need to feel pressured to stay close to the source.

AMC cancelled the show (the creators had plans to go on)....but somehow they've convinced them with these new shows which kind of makes sense if the audience is there. The storyline now has too many characters and communities to keep track of, by splitting everyone down into different series, it makes it a little easier to follow.

My problem with the excessive spinoffs is now that they've already announced 3 different spinoffs I'm convinced that this damn show is not going to have a proper ending. It'll be left unresolved, and will have multiple open ended cliffhangers to set up these new shows which is just wrong.

I hate this show, hate what it's become, and can't wait for it to end

I see your point. And I mostly agree. But to play devil's advocate, you can argue that if they're still alive in any way at the end, the story isn't over (for any story really). So the best we can hope for is it seems like a kind of ending that doesn't command you to follow. Because even if it was a group we didn't know, it'd be reasonable that some might stay and some might splinter off.
