REAL REASON

Now that all the sensationalism has died down, does anyone know the REAL reason Carl was killed off?

reply

What reasons are you dismissing?

reply

The explanations the producers have given. Whatever the reasons it seems they are trying to replace Carl with "Carl-clone" Henry. It is not working out.

reply

I figured it was just cost savings. Get rid of him before he can negotiate more money for being over 18. Splitting his comic story story arch with Henry, with the Lydia connection and Judith with her connection to Negan.

reply

Please, Carl didn’t have great charisma but Henry is far worse. I can’t spend another season with this idiot character.

Sack the show runners before it’s too late.

reply

They didnt want to deal with the CGEye

Isn't the real reason he was just a boring character? I mean they're all boring other than Rick, Shane and Neagan. I'm still hanging in watching but am not invested or careing for anyone. I'm actually rooting for the bad people more just cause it's more interesting. I think the whispers leaders big henchman is the most interesting character in the show now after last week. And of course watching the trailer for the next episode it looks like he may not last long. Typical shitty TWD writing.

Kirkman has always had plans for Carl after Rick leaves in the comics, and some of the groundwork is already being laid. If the show continues to loosely follow the comics, someone from the younger generation will eventually become the leader. There's no one else in the comics besides Carl, but on the show, they have several who could fill that role.

reply

I understand it's loosely following the comics, I was just saying it with tongue in cheek. The show has gotten so bad, it's just too bad. I don't know if the source material is not strong enough to churn out a good tv show or the TV writers and show runner are really just doing a horrible job. If it's the latter, it's strange that Kirkman supports this trash that is being shown now.

reply

Kirkman is EP on the show, I'm sure they ask for his input on things. He still helps promote it because it's in his best interest to do so, but the showrunners have the creative control.

The early seasons had some major deviations from the comics, but when Gimple took over, they wanted him to bring it back in line as much as possible. There are still some subplots that are original for the TV show that have been hit or miss.

I think they run into problems sometimes when they are committed to doing a story straight from the pages, but it contains something that doesn't move very well from print to film. Like I never would have imagined they would put the tiger in the show because CGI on regular TV shows is usually on a smaller budget than a movie. Or Carl getting his eye shot out. They made it look just like the comics, which would he physically impossible for someone to survive.

Glenn's eye looked just like the comics, too. But that was a one-off, where they would have to do that for Carl before every scene he is in without it covered up. And when he meets Lydia in the comics, he stops trying to cover it up.

"but on the show, they have several who could fill that role."

But none that the viewers actually give a shit about now Carl is dead. :/

reply

Then Rick would not have gone off the deep end if Carl didnt die.

reply

I have no theories.

To me that is just the formula.
We've got to kill somebody off, we've got to do something shocking (even though 50 liked characters have already been killed off over 8 or so seasons already), so who is it we are going to kill.....how about Carl....now, how about Jesus, how about this character or that character.

They've got to kill someone (at least that is what they think).

reply

My guess is they kill Jesus because he is their best hand-to-hand fighter who never even got a scratch when he fights. If a whisperer can fool him enough to get close and stab him, then they are a serious threat.

It was similar to Abraham, he was the most fearless and he got cut down. Negan used that to put fear into everyone else except Daryl, though Daryl was removed from the group.

reply

I thought the real reason was that he got way too old to play his character. At the time they were only a few years into the apocalypse, and he went from like 8 years old to a young adult.

Although now that they are a decade into the apocalypse in the story, he would have been all right.
