Question about Eugene.....

I haven't watched any of the episodes from the 2nd half of the season although I roughly kept up in reviews..Not sure if I'm doing next season either...but I digress.
It doesn't really seem like I missed too much as I'm aware of things like Eugene being caught by Rosita and Daryl and easily escaping after throwing up..

But my real question is...are we to believe that the weasel Eugene had a sudden change of heart in finally coming to the aid of his old friends...or that it was his plan all along?

Which is it suppose to be?

Either scenario seems difficult to swallow with what we've been shown of him since he was taken by Negan.

Well, like everyone has been saying, Eugene has always been about self-preservation. So if he sensed the tide was turning in favor of Rick's group, he probably felt that was his best play. I don't think he had a grand scheme overall. In fact, he actually mentioned that it was Gabriel's idea (making faulty bullets) that inspired him to do it. I also think when Rosita dressed him down, it motivated him to prove his worth.

reply

I agree 100% @replicant4. I think that's exactly what happened and Eugene ended up saving the day!

reply

So ridiculous the they didn't test a single round and just trusted the ones that were hand picked by Eugene. I would be pulling 1 in 50 or so.

reply

I think the scene with Eugene, Negan, and the test pistol & "rick" dummy was supposed to show us that Negan now had ultimate trust in Eugene. Eugene sold it to him very well with the "more of a need to" line. Negan says something like, "Well, look at you..." looking genuinely impressed while putting his hand on Eugene's shoulder. You're right though. I would test a few from every single container, if manpower/time allowed.

reply

Negan himself did test several rounds.

You also have to remember that Eugene went as far as escape back to the Sanctuary after being kidnapped by Daryl and Rosita - the Saviors really didn't have any reason not to trust him at that point.

reply

Negan himself did test several rounds.

Yes, but if Negan is supposed to be this shrewd and diabolical leader who can always outwit his opponents, he would never have trusted his entire plan to rest on a single test of one weapon handed to him by the guy responsible for their entire ammunition supply. It's kind of like in stories with a con man who pulls one over on his marks because they trust the single piece of information they get shown by him and don't do any further checking. And those stories are just about money; in this case it's life and death.

reply

I am not sure I personally would have doubted anything from such a pathetic coward as Eugene. That wasn't even his plan all along!

With someone like him I think it's natural to presume he wouldn't have the guts to do anything other than follow.

reply

Even if you happen to believe that Eugene had totally earned Negan's trust (I don't--Negan had just learned that Simon and Dwight, his two top men, had betrayed him, and they were both supposedly loyal Saviors. Eugene seemed to be loyal, but he once was a member of the opposing side in this war, so his flipping his loyalty would be entirely possible), you have to admit that one single man--Eugene--could in no way guarantee that EVERY SINGLE BULLET the Saviors would fire in battle would make every gun explode the way it did. Not only that, but the Saviors couldn't have been completely out of older ammunition and some weapons would have been already loaded with those rounds.

reply

Yeah, but I don't nitpick like that when it comes to The Walking Dead. It's one of those shows that I just watch to see how it ends, the way I did with Dexter when the quality went way down.

I'll keep watching for as long as I am enjoying it, when/if the time comes that I am not, I'll stop.

For now these all these inconsistencies don't bother me enough to stop following.

reply

yes agreed.

He definitely has a thing about Rosita, she could the only person he cared about thus its more about getting back in her favour than doing the right thing.

reply

I'd guess he made the decision between the time he escaped from Daryl and Rosita to the time he made it back to the bullet factory. He was thinking about what Rosita said to him and realized he was in a position to do something truly meaningful while putting himself back into a relatively safe situation at Alexandria. He put Gabriel back on the line and told him to sort the shells, but he was fully aware Gabriel would find a way to sabotage while passing quality checks (Eugene already showed him how he knew the first batch were duds), so Eugene had plausible deniability.
