I was really hoping they weren't clueless enough to really make germ warfare possible in a universe where they already established people don't turn that way. Many characters over many years have been injured with weapons that previously killed walkers and no one turned. Coming into contact with the blood turned no one and made no one sick.
Granted, at the beginning of the series I thought this was a danger and would make them turn, but again and again, I was proven wrong. The writers can't now do a 180 and pretend it's all of a sudden possible and have a mass turning like they did. That was some of the worst writing in the history of the written word.
The writers really proved their idiocy with the most recent episode. This new behavior does not coincide with anything that's happened in the TV universe. Ever. This was a complete farce.
Don't even get me started on the ridiculous set up of shoving everyone together in one room, injured included. It's already well known this can't be done, in case someone dies, yet for the writer's idiotic, nonsensical plot to work, they had to make everyone forget this important well known fact and drop their IQ to zero.
This is so far beyond shameful, I don't even know what to call it.
If there is something in Walker blood that turns them, then them smothering themselves in Walker blood/guts should have turned Glenn, Gabriel, Negan, Rick, etc a long time ago. It was dripping in their eyes, nose and mouth.
Wouldn't some of it get into their pores as well?
I think the writers and producers know the ratings have fallen steeply, and seem to be desperate to introduce a twist. But Zombie and Horror Movie 101 tells you that once you establish universe laws, you stick with them.
Yep, even if you forget that it may or may not have dripped into their noses, eyes and mouths, the simple fact is anything smear on your skin will get into your pores. The rules were bites, and death only, being the recipe for turning. This is some sad retcon shit.
There's really no difference between using walker guts and using animal guts or just sticking the weapons in the mud. If you cut someone with it and they get an infection, or a walker bites someone, they're gonna die and turn anyway because everyone already has the walker virus.
But there are people in the Hilltop who have spent a lot of time out there with other groups, they should know if you have a room full of wounded sick people, they need to be watched in case someone dies. Maggie knows this as well as anyone because it happened in the prison when the water got tainted.

More than even changing the rules about the infections turning people, this is what REALLY bugged the living crap out of me. ALL these people should know by now (it's been years since the zombie plague has happened) that you don't leave injured people with serious or even semi-serious injuries unattended...especially in a post-apocalyptic world where medical treatments are ad hoc and improvised due to shortages. Figure that if an injury poses a slight chance of death in the real world with proper medical care, in this world that's probably multiplied by 10.
These kind of lazy ignorings of what should be common sense for these characters--especially the "good" guys we're supposed to be rooting for--just feels me with contempt now for this show, basically because my intelligence is being insulted by the writers who must think all of their audience is a bunch of idiots and won't remember what's happened in the past on this show.

Regarding the wounded being unattended....I believe the woman doctor and Siddiq both were up, awake and "making rounds". Regarding the lack of consistency with regards to walker blood......it doesn't matter whether or not the rules were established for we the viewers. We know MORE than the characters in the story do. It stands to reason they would make the assumption (whether right or wrong) that walker blood could be dangerous and function as a toxin. The Saviors ranch walkers like cattle. I'm sure they're seen plenty of instances where exposure to walker blood has caused at the very least, sickness. We all saw it firsthand with Gabriel.
It doesn't need to be an all-or-nothing "rule" when it comes to a virus we know very little about. Some viruses change the rules themselves. They mutate....sometimes even become airborn. Other viruses effect some people and not others. 10 people could have unprotected sex with an AIDS patient...and perhaps only 2/10 get infected. Also, there's a difference between tainted blood getting absorbed into tear ducts or pores...and getting introduced into the bloodstream. You could rub AIDS blood on your arms, wash it off, and would probably be fine. But if you used a needle with that same blood on it....your chances of getting infected would be much higher.
It makes sense that a blade (or arrow) introducing walker blood directly to the bloodstream (like a bite would), may....MAY be toxic to the recipient. Either way, this isn't a hill anyone needs to die on, or get so butthurt about. They "change the rules" on shows like these on occasion, but it shouldn't take away from the fun of watching how things play out. If it has done so for you, stop complaining....and just stop watching. In the first couple seasons, we saw walkers who could climb (fences)...we saw walkers who were fast (chasing Otis in the high school gym). Heck, we even saw groups of people get deathly sick (at the prison) as a direct result of the virus (tainted pigs).
Seriously....viewers can forgive kempt lawns....neverending summer seasons....zombies coordinated enough to stand up and walk....strong enough to bite through clothing....but you get hung-up on the rules of how a VIRUS can spread?? If there's one rule that can change on a dime....it's a virus. Viruses are by their very DEFINITION...a mutation of a rule!
Way to bend-over and apologize for a show that is now lazily and incompetently written. Evidently it doesn't bother lil' fanboys like yourself who can always pull some excuses out of their asses to justify these silly deviations from what was already established rules, but those of us who actually REMEMBER what WAS and suddenly now IS are understandably bothered by them.
And as for your standard fanboy moron rejoinder of "ehhh...you don't like it--then stop watching!" I was planning to quit this show whenever the Negan arc mercifully ended, but hell, I may stick around to rip this train-wreck of a show a new a-hole each week. Considering how annoying it's become, I think I just found my newest hate-watch show.
And by the way, if you don't like criticisms...then stop reading them! Nyah!
This is a great commentary. Yes, it could very well be a mutation. This year's
Influenza vaccine is only 30% effective and researchers are trying to develop a "universal vaccine". It's difficult because the virus ,indeed , mutates.
whatever, it was not enough, and if you have people who could possibly die you must restrain them. they are smart enough to know that. every episode has some greater stupidity than the last ones. it's not fun to watch anymore just waiting for the next dumb thing.
I wonder how many times Daryl show with his re-used crossbows used on the dead then on some humans from before (I think injuring some of them) yet they never turned.
They could specify that the knives, spears, bullets, etc have to be coated with zombie brains, or a specific part of the brain ... or spinal cord fluid. Of course how zombies could retain any moisture at all over years would be impossible.
