Conservative men are the number one irrefutable proof that being gay is not a choice. Just look at the disdain they have for women. If being gay was a choice, they would definitely choose a male companionship.

shareMaybe I'm in the minority, but even with hearing so many talking about this movie ahead of time, when I, personally, went into it, I had no idea that it was going to be pushing such a heavy-handed message about "toxic masculinity" and how women are victims of a patriarchy. So, from my perspective, I just figured the success was mostly due to a combination of good advertising and popular actors. And, of course, the lucky happenstance of having this "Barbenheimer" thing go viral. If it weren't for this latter bit, I doubt the film would have been nearly as popular as it was.
That being said, even if the "message" of the film itself was at play, I don't think it would be signifying how much women hate men. People will just hop on whatever bandwagon is trending in front of them at the time for a chance at activism. Doesn't matter what it is, really. In this instance, the oppressed was women and the oppressors were men. Later the oppressed became Palestine and the oppressors Israel. Before that, the oppressed were black and the oppressors were white. In the 90s, they became obsessed with things like the story of the West Memphis Three, where the oppressed were misunderstood goth kids and the oppressors were the religious normies. And so on and so forth, all the way back to the alluring tales of the innocent Christians and barbarians being victims of the mean old Romans. I think people just naturally love that narrative structure and having any opportunity to signal that they're standing up for an underdog.
I think this is a bit simplistic... Sure there are women that hate men.. as are there men who hate women... What I think most people who criticize the movie fail to see is that the Barbie world is just as fucked up as the real world...
And I know I will probably have people screaming woke at me now... but even as a man (I am a white male) if you claim the world still to this day is not dominated by men (even though it is getting better) you are ignoring the facts...
But this is a satire and you are supposed to exaggerate the content so people can laugh at it... but it doesn't hurt if makes you think when you leave the theatre...
I honestly don't understand why some people are so upset at this movie...
I'm not upset about it, I just roll my eyes at its over-simplistic, heavy handed message. I feel pity for women who really believe that's how men are, and who live their lives thinking they're oppressed victims of some kind of "patriarchy". They just come off as childish and sad.
However, aside from the trite, specious, overstated message, "Barbie" is an entertaining movie with a lot of laughs, a spectacular production design, and good performances. Evan Rhea Perlman comes off likeable, which is truly an accomplishment.
Yeah, me too. There is a toxic form of masculinity. I think we could just call it toxic behaviour, period. It has nothing to do with "masculinity" however one defines that, but it definitely does have to do with the FACT that patriarchy is real and women are treated as less than men. I did not play with Barbies or have any affection for them, fashion, or all the female rules most women get snared in (I chose not to follow those rules) but I was excited to see this movie as I thought it would be a satire. It had some good bits but I think it needed a rewrite or two more. Yeah, the Barbie world is as fucked up as the real world. Agree on that for sure.
shareThere is no "patriarchy". It's not real, only a mental construct of insecure women who would rather wallow in imagined oppression than face up to their own shortcomings. Women are most certainly not treated as less than men, except in cultures dominated by Islam.

shareI'd sum up the movie in one statement. A man can simply decide he doesn't want to watch the Barbie movie because he knows the movie wasn't made for him. That same Man is now deemed sexist and if you don't agree with the movie's feminist take then your girlfriend or significant other might break up with you. Both things really happened.

shareI watched it on a dare. It's feminist message was crap and it treated its male cast like they were idiots. I did like seeing Rhea Perlman at the end. I loved watching Cheers during its run and it was great to see her on screen again.
