Box Office Stunner: ‘Barbie’ Opens to Staggering $162M

Filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s female-fueled Barbie opened to a historic $162 million domestically, a threshold usually reserved for male-driven superhero fare or marquee IP, such as the final Harry Potter movie. It came in well ahead of an expected $90 million to $110 million and helped fuel one of the biggest weekends in history. And the final figure of $162 million was even ahead of Sunday’s already-stupendous $155 million.

Barbie — which brings to life Mattel’s iconic fashion doll — is also strutting to big numbers overseas. The pic launched to an impressive $182 million from 70 markets. It scored the biggest opening ever for a WB title in major markets, including Mexico ($22.3 million), Brazil ($15.9 million) and Australia ($14.6 million). The U.K. led with $22.9 million, the biggest showing for the studio since the pandemic. Barbie wasn’t expected to make a big splash in Asian markets, although it did do better than expected in China with $8.2 million.

The success of this movie really got some men's g-strings in a bunch. The haters are RAGING! If there's a sequel, I hope it includes Brie Larson and Olivia Wilde, with a guest appearance by Anita Sarkeesian.

Brie Larson could play a superhero Barbie who apprehends some incel Kens trying to sabotage the air conditioner of a movie theater.

Olivia Wilde is the judge presiding over their case, and Anita Sarkeesian is the prosecutor.

Their defense attorney is Mark Hamill, who drives them crazy because he's drinking a glass of green milk and loving it.

The film isn't arguing for equality though. And aren't women usually treated better than men by most of society?

The film is arguing for Barbie dolls to be about independent women and not to conform them to stereotype gender roles.

I'm not sure if that is the main message of the film. It certainly wasn't the implication I got. What specifically in the film sends that message?

That felt more tacked on to me about the ordinary Barbie doll and doesn't seem to be the central focus of the film.

How could you NOT get that message? They repeat it more times than there are minutes in this movie's runtime. Also, did you start staring at your shoes during that trippy montage at the end? That was entirely about womanhood.
