Woke or not....what the hell is the appeal of this for adults???.....

I guess it's kinda like a live action Toy story..maybe???

Can't believe people are excited to see this.....

reply

The publicised enthusiasm might not be real, could be numerous shills acted synchronously created a social media campaign.

reply

Kinda like all the media calling John Wick 4 the best action film ever and than basically doing the same for MI7... 😂...

reply

Kind of, John Wick 4 was not that great, but the hyping was unbelievable.

reply

Yeah. I'm seeing a lot of that this year. They are really trying to re-create what Maverick had last year. I don't blame people like Tom Cruise trying to promote the films and the theater going experience. But as I have said elsewhere around here , I think oversaturation has ruined the film industry. Just too much content out there both theatrical and television. With most of it being scif/fantasy/action.....

reply

Much easier to create a synchronized social media campaign than an actual movie people want to watch.

reply

One of reasons why it is a booming industry, shills are not just needed for movies, it has so many applications.

Same as most big budget Hollywood films these days: childhood nostalgia and/or pop culture brand recognition, family entertainment day out for adults with children. No different to the appeal of, say, a Transformers movie or the recent Super Mario.

This is just what mainstream $100m+ Hollywood entertainment is now.

reply

I get the nostalgia thing. But the audience for that would be mostly middle aged woman and than of course kids. I'm hearing grown men in their 40's and 50's in the media hyping it.... 😂.....yet Indiana Jones gets thrown under the bus...and reviewers being more reserved with their enthusiasm due to the whole Crystal Skull fiasco with the critics and fans on complete polar opposites....

reply

The pop culture / brand recognition is more important to the marketing than the nostalgia. Nostalgia just gives you your built-in audience for these things. But in much the same way as most of the audience for Marvel movies weren't necessarily comic book readers as kids, most of the audience for Barbie won't necessarily have played with Barbie dolls.

reply

true I am 80 and played with first Barbie

reply

😂

reply

You were sixteen in 1959 when the first Barbie dolls were sold. Sixteen-year-olds I knew back then were getting their driver's licenses.

reply

I'm a guy and I might watch a movie about Margo Robbie being pretty

reply

That's what Once Upon a time in Hollywood is for. She looked great in that film...

Growing up in the age before digital, nothing in this movie reminds me of the Barbie dolls. It's almost like they went out of their way to do so.

reply

The marketing made it look like it would be silly and fun, so people were expecting a good time. The movie itself is actually a mixed bag with some fun moments, a few laughs, but lots of lecturing and an anti-male message.

reply

Kind of expected, isn't it? It is basically a marketing film or movie length commercial to update the theme and concept of Barbie dolls, turning it into a feminist symbol.

reply

It is basically a marketing film or movie length commercial

Yes. Whatever its merits or otherwise as a film, it's fundamentally a toy commercial. Mattel will view it as repositioning their product line to appeal to wider demographics or to 'future-proof' it or some such similar corporate marketing spiel. It's about selling dolls.

reply

I was expecting and would have been fine with a grilpower message like"girls can do anything" or "women should pursue their dreams", but I was surprised with the constant mention of the patriarchy, the really negative portrayal of Ken, and the message that men should be discriminated against and not be allowed to be on the supreme court.

reply

So it's a true feminist film then.

reply

Ha, that bad. Feminists these days are becoming really ugly creatures.

reply

No idea. Reminds me of adults who love Disney lol

Facts

reply

Adults used to be kids.

Its why adults go to movies about teenage mutant ninja turtles, transformers, Mario Brothers, GI Joe, etc

reply

I mean I think Margo Robbie is perfectly cast as Barbie. I don't think it should have been a story that's PG-13 and be more aimed at Kids.

reply

The marketing made it look like a silly camp comedy, which even an adult can enjoy. Unfortunately, the movie itself was meh, basically a huge commercial for Mattel. The only thing I liked was Ryan Gosling-- he cracked me up almost every time he was onscreen.

Still, the marketing worked. My local theater hasn't been this packed since TOP GUN MAVERICK last year.

reply

It's so-called "soft porn", nothing more.
