Trying too hard?

I havent seen the movie yet, but i get the picture with the trailer. Anyway, Cage is not really all that popular these days, but does anyone else notice looking at the poster, that they have done everything to lure guys to watch it. I mean the way Amber is presented on the advert; a bit of leg, lighter area around chest/breasts and innocent look on her face, and behind we have extremely macho trying to look Cage...

"enjoying your not trying too hard."
-Yeah, a sentence of this structure makes sense coming from someone who liked this movie. What the hell are you even trying to say with that sentence? I literally have no idea what it could mean.

Coming from someone whose first language is English, allow me to say very clearly say this was a really bad flick all around. As the OP says, they tried really hard to make a tongue in cheek/fun action movie that's over the top, but they failed at everything.

It's too serious in terms of plot to be a comedic action flick, has too many characters we don't need that stop the action cold every 5 mins, doesn't explain a lot (why doesn't the accountant from hell use his magic powers to end all this crap?), has way too much time between action scenes to push the serious plot, and had maybe 10 entertaining minutes out of 100.

What a let down. Could have been super entertaining, instead we get another pile of Nic Cage feces. Skip this and just watch 'shoot em up' instead, they stole at least one scene right from it for this anyway...

"Did you mean for all those words to come out like that or did they just fall out randomly?"-H.H.

Don't take movie that ain't taking itself serious too seriously :)

Should just enjoy without thinking too much, if cant do that don't watch movies that you cant enjoy.

reply

I would totally agree with that. I love die hard, ong bak, kickboxer, predator, shoot em up, commando, crank, etc... so I have no problem with turning off my brain and watching some stuff blow up.

What I was trying to get across was that this movie failed even on THAT level. And on a side note, I thought this movie took itself more serious than I expected

As I said, maybe 10 mins of the 100 minute run time was over the top 'turn off your brain' fun, the rest was just a void of bad movie making with gobs of plot and characters we don't care about or need to see in a film called 'drive angry 3d'...

Cheers for this heads up. I hate Cage in "ordinary" movies - action movies, blockbusters etc. Off beat films suit him imo. I'll avoid this.

reply

I thought it was an excellent flick. Whilst perhaps not in the same league as the likes of 'Kill Bill', it managed to get the grindhouse feel down, and there were enough cool lines in it to be more than memorable. I thought the Accountant character was cool as well.

Maybe I'm just starved for exploitation cinema these days.

Agree with you - it was just out and out fun to watch this. Film never takes itself seriously, Cage hams it up, Heard looks stunning. Shame it crashed and burned at the box office cos I'd love to see a sequel!

There's no more room in hell...

reply

Yeah, because a movie in which Nic Cage drinks beer out of a human skull isn't off-beat at all.

WHAT?

Oh, and what did you just say about the movie? Trying too hard? Like you, with that intellectual-wannabe sentence you got wrong on your first language?
Oh the irony, it hurts.

Yup.

reply

Yes, they tried to make it cool, but you can look right through it. Maybe some red neck idiot still thinks it was cool. Normal people just see boring over the top action with stupid CGI crap on top.

reply

With a bunch of unnecessary sex scenes, it was trying too hard.

trailers are meant to lure you to watch the movie, hence they always feature the best parts

One of the lamest movies I have watched in a long time..almost like this film was trying to do a Tarrintino spoof type tacky comedy. Cheese factor 10! BEYOND EPIC FAIL IMO.

reply

Trying-too-hard was obvious the minute I saw Nick Cage on the poster. He's perfect for the role. A good title for his memoirs!

reply

I don't think this film was trying too hard. It is what it is. The dialogue was never overly forced or full of wannabe memorable quotes.

It was just a deliberately over the top film with plenty of tits and explosions.

The key for this film is to watch it and judge it yourself. I find, when it comes to films, that I never listen to others opinions simply because most people expect way too much out of a film. Use your own judgement.

reply

This movie really cooked and was much more "great grindhouse" than Tarantino's weak try with Death Proof.
