Do people not understand this is suppose to be bad...

A 5.5 rating is way too low

People might "understand" it was "supposed" to be bad, but does that then make the movie "good"? It's still a bad film, regardless of intent.

The "it's supposed to be bad" excuse is just that - a flat-out excuse. "Death Proof" had the same problem, as do many of Robert Rodriguez' films. Just because the director sets out to make a bad film does not in anyway justify it - there is no "other" context to see it in. As Huey Lewis said, bad is bad...

Lame slasher films from the 80s were made in the most cynical, moneymaking, lazy fashions as possible, and so are the countless, awful romantic comedies that come out every f'n week - it's all the same thing...but many will give the 'grindhouse'-bad films a pass because the content is so, like, way cool. Don't kid yourself, though - it all comes from the same cynical well.

I guess some people feel if you deliberately make crap, you get props not raspberries for it

It's still much better than many films which are supposed to be good.

Death Proof is written and directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Yes, I know. Two separate ideas. I should have said, "Tarantino's 'Death Proof' had...."

There is a fine line between brilliance and crap...

So true, so true....

I enjoyed this movie, but I expected it to be delivered with a bit of schlock. That being said, there were moments of the schlock that truly were just not good.

It can be good-bad, but sometimes it's just bad-bad.

yr right dude. i love this movie. you have movies that try to take themselves way to srsly and then this movie chooses not too and its a wild fun ride, unlike a snoozefest trying to get the new smart "in" movie.

It's not "supposed to be bad" though.

But if it is, then a 5.5 rating would be too high. As since when are bad films rated high (or in this case, medicore)?
Surely if it's supposed to be bad, then a lower rating would be best?

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

Well, 5.5 actually means that a little more people liked it than didn't; seems like a pretty good rating for a niche movie(neogrindhouse)to me.

It's like how "Sky Captain" only has a 6.1 or "The Rocketeer" has a 6.4 and both are 'dieselpunk/two-fisted tale' movies which most people either aren't into or are even aware such science fiction subgenres exist. As a fan of these and fascinated by the era they are set in, I'm happy they have a decent to more-than-decent rating.

One day men will look back and say that I gave birth to the twentieth century.
