This is everything wrong with Hollywood

Another shitty blockbuster starring The Rock who everyone is sick of

reply

I'm not sick of The Rock, but I am sick of shitty blockbusters.

reply

Im sick of both of them and The Rock is responsible for a lot of shitty blockbusters

reply

This. The Rock is fine in non-shitty movies.

reply

The Rock hasnt been good since Doom. Which, ironically is his best role in his catalog

reply

Doom sucked.

reply

At least it wasn’t the same tired cookie-cutter roles Dwayne loves to flock to.

reply

Yeah it was.

He just did it early on.

reply

I lost interest in Johnson a long time ago. I feel zero excitement or anticipation now when I hear of a new Rock-project.

reply

The Rock is going to do a bio-pic next directed by Benny Safdie called The Smashing Machine. Think he's sick of stuff like this and ready for some real acting roles.

reply

A Rock/Safdie collab was definitely not something I had on my bingo card.

reply

I saw it last night and loved it!

reply

Same. It's hilarious how you can safely predict which movies are worthwhile fun by the doorknobs that bleat about how above it all they are. This was an uncomplicated good time at the movies; no more, no less.

reply

Problem is he can’t act.

He plays the exact same character in every role.

reply

So playing the same character means an actor can’t act? No that’s just range. The Rock has range (he’s good in Ballers) he just obviously has settled into not really expanding his variety. He collects a massive pay check and is fine with it.

reply

I've kinda checked out of Hollywood movies for the time being. Not intentionally, but I'm watching a ton of European (mostly Italian) horror/sleaze/exploitation from the 70s and 80s, and enjoying it so damn much. It's actually fun; I used to feel that way about Hollywood movies, but these days it seems less and less from there interests me.

reply

DoctorThirteen, I've been doing exactly the same for the past few years, I'm finding it hard to track down some decent Italian horror/sleaze/exploitation from the 70s and 80 as I've watched quite a few. Can you drop me some recommendations on here please? I'm dying to watch some.

reply

Sure, here are some horror/giallo/nunsploitation I've enjoyed (including some greats from the 60s),

The Whip and the Body (1963)
Crypt of Horror (1964)
Blood and Black Lace (1964)
Hatchet for the Honeymoon (1970)
Count Dracula (1970)
A Bay of Blood (1971)
The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh (1971)
The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1971)
Web of the Spider (1971)
Murder Mansion (1972)
Don't Torture a Duckling (1972)
The Case of the Bloody Iris (1972)
The Nun and the Devil (1973)
Story of a Cloistered Nun (1973)
The Sinful Nuns of St Valentine (1974)
Strip Nude for Your Killer (1975)
Eyeball (1975)
Anthropophagous (1980)
City of the Living Dead (1980)
The House by the Cemetery (1981)
The Other Hell (1981)
The New York Ripper (1982)
The Sect (1991)

Hope there's some there you haven't already seen!

reply

Thank you!

I have yet to see:

The Whip and the Body (1963)
Crypt of Horror (1964)
The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh (1971)
The Nun and the Devil (1973)
Story of a Cloistered Nun (1973)
The Sinful Nuns of St Valentine (1974)
Eyeball (1975))
The Other Hell (1981)
The Sect (1991)

I really fancy The Sect, and Eyeball, I've got a link saved to The Other Hell on YouTube at present, so I'll watch that as it's immediately available.

reply

No worries. The Whip and the Body and Crypt of Horror both star Christopher Lee (he did quite a few movies in Europe around that time). Eyeball is bonkers as hell (in a good way) and pretty heavy on the sleaze. Hope you enjoy!

reply

I've obtained The Sect and will now be watching that on the weekend, I also found Eyeball on Youtube, so will give that a shot too. I was aware of Mr Lee doing a few Euro films, yes, the quality of which aren't too great from what I've seen. I've heard of The Whip & The Body before, I guess I should watch that one as it's Bava, right?

reply

The Whip and the Body is outstanding, and might just be my favourite Christopher Lee performance of all. And I can't think of any Bava movie that looks better. I hope the version of Eyeball on YT isn't censored as there's a good amount of sleaze and gore (inc eyeballs!) in that.

reply

i HOPE THE SLEEZE AND GORE IS INTACT! I've enjoyed most of the Umberto Lenzi films that I've seen. OK, I'll make the effort to watch Whip, but make sure I source a coupy that is a godo cpy as you advised it's a good looking film. Cheers for the help fella.

reply

Hollywood stopped making good movies around 17 years ago.

reply

I agree overall but disagree on the time frame. Reason why is films like The Prestige, Inception, The Depahhhted and District 9
