would you even want a Justified movie or miniseries?

They ended it before it got tired and stale, but it seems like Hollywood immediately gets to work with the rumors of continuing it in a movie. The Deadwood movie rumors will never end and so many good shows are being rebooted (X-Files, Twin Peaks) or even just as one-off seasons (like 24 - Live Another Day). Were you happy with how Justified ended or do you hope in three or four years they'll decide to bring it back?

It's fine how it is, as far as I'm concerned.

Miniseries with Raylan out of Harlan

Just finished it, and unless I missed something, it seems the $9 million is still buried somewhere. I think that's one hell of a plot hook to make a spin-off series, kind of like what they did in Fargo season 1.

It is pretty heavily suggested that Wynn Duffey ended up with a significant amount of that money.

Admittedly, I did lose track of the money, there were two large duffel bags when Markham delivered it, then as I recall we see Ava and her uncle struggle with getting one bag up the mountain? It has been a while since I have seen it, but later we see her with a back pack with 1MM.

We also see Boyd try to unsuccessfully did up a bag. He digs up Grooves instead, but then the camera leaves Boyd, so who knows, maybe he found a bag later? Maybe only Ava knows where it is? Maybe Zacharia hid a bag, and since he is dead no one knows.

The 1MM went back to Markham before he died. You are right, nothing definitive is stated about the 9MM. However, we know Ava called someone for help and that person got her out of Harlan. Raylan theorizes it was Duffey, and since we are meant to accept that Raylan is almost always right, I think that is probably what happened, albeit off screen.

Suffice it to say, Duffey wasn't going to help anyone for free, so he did end up with something. Still, it could be he got the remaining contents of one bag with another still out there? Four-Five million would be a big payoff by itself.

Several other things were left open as well. I wondered if the four year time jump was done to get the show to the present day just in case they came back for a made for FX movie or a short run series. The show started in 2010, but covered under 2 years of time. The time jump in the finale put it back into the present, so they could easily pick it back up in real time.

Also, when Boyd surrenders, he flatly tells Raylan that he will get out of prison someday. After the time jump Ava echoes the same sentiment to Raylan that is why she never wanted Boyd to find out about his son.

Can you imagine Boyd's surprise to find out that Ava is alive? His elation if he found out he had a son? Someone like Boyd would see a child as his redemption. Then there would be the hot rage toward Ava and Raylan for keeping the boy a secret. It would be a powerful scene. There is no one better than Goggins to pull it off.

It is like the writers are taunting the audience saying that the story isn't finished yet.

Finally, all the regular cast lived. They can bring back any character they want (Tim, Art, Rachel)- and I hope they do, even if I am being delusional.

A new series with the same characters would be too much, I fear. Justified had a beautiful ending. I can see a spin-off series with different characters happening, but it probably wouldn't live up to the original.

reply

Oh, I don't see a spinoff either, nor anything approaching a full run series.

I do think a limited run series (I am thinking British style, like 2-3 eps, ie Sherlock, Luther) or an FX movie could work quite well.

The ending was clever. They told a full story, and didn't refuse to resolve important issues. There were no cop outs. However, there is just enough left untied, that they can very plausibly revisit part of the final storyline....if they chose.

I wouldn't want to them to even consider it unless they got the same writers back. They also couldn't do it without Goggins and Olyphant and I don't either of them are hurting for work. Personally, I would also really want Tim and Ava back as well.

I'll take Timothy and Walton any way I can!

Wasn't Elmore Leonard working on another Raylan Givens novel upon his death? It was called "Blue Dreams" or smth like that. Even if it wasn't properly finished, "Justified" crew could turn it into a movie or a limited-series event.

No thanks.

The revival trends taking great TV shows that ended especially and bringing them back only to *beep* on their original legacy that made the entire series great to begin with.

reply

Sure, but just focus on Raylan...I feel there's more potential with him and some one shot stories. I feel like Boyd and Ava's arcs were tied up quite well, but at the same time there were quite a few loose ends. Like who really helped Ava? What happened to Duffy (he would be a cool character to bring back for a story), did the mountain people end up living in Raylan's house? Was there more to the three soldiers who worked for Markham (esp Garrett Dillahunts character) than met the eye?

Some minor or seasonal characters could make an appearance as well such as Wendy and Kendall or Constable Bob. Just no Boyd or Ava.
