Sigourney Weaver = Queer Geek icon

Just learned this. Makes sense. She's not only a great actress, but strong and tough when the part calls for it. Mostly, I didn't quite get the relevance of the reference when Deputy Tim Gutterson claimed to fantasize about getting stuck between Sigourney Weaver's thighs. Now I do. Well played, Graham Yost!

Well that seems odd, but OK. However, it wasn't Graham Yost.

He was asked about that line and he said it was all Jacob Pitts. Yost said that he knew people would think it was him (apparently he knows Sigourney Weaver or used to live near her, I can't quite remember), but he said Jacob is the one that threw it out there.

Funny, I thought it was more confirmation that Gutterson was in fact heterosexual, but was oddly into older women.

In one season he has a throwaway line to Nelson when you can hear him defending an "old" Victorian Secret model. In S6 he asks Raylan if he would still sleep with the bank manager (again older than him) if she were a Neo Nazi. Raylan hadn't said anything about her, but it sounded like Tim was fantasizing. I guess I am simple minded but I thought the Sigourney Weaver comment fit right in with that subtle theme.

Interesting, because Jacob Pitts is also ambiguous about his orientation in private life, and often plays gay characters. So it fits that the suggestion would come from Jacob Pitts. His character, Tim Gutterson, isn't out and wouldn't come out so abruptly. He is just making a joke, no need to get all queeny and dramatic.;-)

I also thought, on first viewing, that the producers were letting us 'off the hook' on the 'is he, or isn't he?' thing by signaling hetero. And thought that until just recently an acquaintance informed me that Sigourney Weaver is not gay, but has had a number of parts with gay subtext and is a big supporter of gay rights; hence, the icon status with queer geeks.

Anyway, Gutterson's choice coice for Sigourney Weaver would have been pretty 1992, not 2015. Just google 'Sigourney Weaver gay icon' and you will be rewarded, like so... http://www.advocate.com/arts-entertainment/people/2013/04/08/sigourney-weaver-thrilled-be-queer-geek-icon
