Thank you. I did some homework. Eastern Kentucky is haunted by poverty and drug abuse. But in western Kentucky like Elizabeth Town, things are beautiful.
I have lived in KY all 36 yrs of my life. 10 years in eastern KY and 26 in central around Lexington.
Eastern KY is on the edge of Appalacian mountains, and there's not a lot of commerce or employment there so poverty is rampant which generally leads to the drugs, especially opiods and pot. Central to the eastern most part of western KY is flat. Lot of horse farms, and tobacco farming. But parts of western KY also gets mountainous again and has similar issues to eastern.
I will say the show wasn't disrespectful to the culture or the people of eastern KY. But it was over sensationalized for the sake of entertainment. Most people you run into in eastern KY, are polite and civil. You go to a gas station 8 out of 10 times the clerk will greet you and carry on a conversation with you while you shop and check out. But there are areas and people like the show portrayed.

Thank you so much for sharing this. And do tell us more about KY. Harlan seems to have a population as small as a few thousand. How is the coal business going now? Can you recognize Wendy Crowe (Alicia Witt)'s accent?
Harlan is small, population wise, but the town is spread out throughout the mountains. Coal business is about the same really. Mostly there are no longer smaller mining companies, most have merged or been bought by bigger companies. You hear the doom/gloom reports with EPA and government sanctions on coal, but it was rough before hand so it really hasn't changed it that much. Wendy's accent sounded familiar. It was more southern than appalachian but really none of the accents seemed out of place. I could hear someone speak very similar to most of the cast. Ava's maybe was the most over done but still beleiveable.

I have a "tourist" question about this. Do you think poor areas like these are dangerous for a foreign tourist to travel in? I mean if tourists from europe did the rental car road movie trip, driving through in a standard rental car, no fancy clothes, keeping a low profile regarding consumption but being very open about being tourists traveling through trying to connect with ppl. Do you think they will be mugged or be welcomed?
_______ "if seagal was thinner this could have been a theatrical product."
No not dangerous at all. If the toursit was a complete douche; worse case they'd be ignored/shunned or asked to get outta town. But if the tourist travelled through and was just friendly and curious for the most part many folks would return polite and friendly too. Some of the 60+ might be more wary of the tourist being a carpet bagger. As far as outright physical harm because you're not from 'round here I would say odds really really low for that to happen.
I was born in the area (Hazard, Perry County a county adjacent to Harlan), but moved at age 7 and grew up in Lexington. I don't have the accent at all, and have been told by family who grew up in the area I look and dress city; but I have gone through the area numerous times and had friendly conversations with lots of folks. Several times through Harlan Co. Of course I have never been in the city of Harlan
