Why did father Solomon laugh at Roxanne?

When she was offering herself to him and he had her spin around- then he just laughed like "yeah right". Was she too fat - or is the idea just too silly for him or something... (I'm watching this on the internet, where the film quality isn't so good- so I'm not sure if I'm just missing something...)

It won't give up, it wants me dead-God damn this noise inside my head...

No obvious reason why he wasn't interested in her. Perhaps he really is in puritanical crusader mode, has no interest in messing around with her at that moment.

And dismissing her advances moves the story along faster.

It was part of her begging the Father for her brother's life. She offers him all her money. Then she offers herself. And then finally she offers to name witches.

reply

Because, IMO, he thought she was pathetic. He had no interest in her and she was just making a fool of herself. Just as he had no interest in the few coins she offered.

I think he was just humiliating her and never had any interest in her sexually. I had the feeling he didn't have any other feelings other then wanting to kill wolves because of his wife. His obsession made him impotent so to speak.

I thought he was thinking about it, but then laughed when he saw her fat ass.

reply

Well speaking personally, I would have accepted her offer. I might have even staged the whole "your brother is the wolf" thing just to get some bargaining action...I might have done it several times, haha!! Even the black guy was like "HELL YEA", haha!! But seriously I think he just wasn't attracted to her. I mean in comparison to the other girls she wasn't the prettiest and didn't have the best body. She wasn't a total train wreck tho. But I think he wasn't gonna go back on his word or make himself look like he was susceptible to seduction for someone of her appeal. He probably felt like that would make him less effective to the villagers.

reply

I think he was just as much a predator as the wolf, so what fun is it when the prey comes so willing? It could also be like you said that he didn't want to be less effective to the villagers but I think overall he was just obsessed with the wolf more then anything.

He was a disgusting impotent little man. As nasty as some of the people on this thread.

Let's not forget he wasn't laughing when Valerie had her back turned towards him... I don't think he was impotent, but disgusting - yeah.

When women make movies or write stories, they are very cruel in their depictions of other women. They love to show women who are weak or inferior and have them be unreliable or traitorous.

The depiction of Roxanne is only there to make the main character look better in comparison. So, whereas Amanda Seyfried's character is strong and beautiful, Roxanne is less attractive and easily manipulated into betraying her. This plot element is solely the result of the women filmmakers' contempt for other women.

They show the priest laughing at her and humiliating her because in their minds, that's how she deserves to be treated.

reply

Seriously? What a depressing outlook on life.

The scene was to show just how cruel and sadistic Solomon is. As soon as she made the suggestion it was obvious he'd reject her - even if she was the most beautiful woman in the world he'd still take more pleasure in his ruthless quest for the wolf than being with her.

Women can be petty when it comes to looks - but it's usually the pretty ones they'd prefer to see rejected.

I agree he was hell-bent in crusader witchhunt mode and viewed the girl's actions as pathetic. So he humiliated her by having her turn around and just scoffed her off with a laugh. Also, he was clearly around 60+ years old and they didn't have viagra back then, so he likely didn't have any interest in sex in the first place.

reply

Thanks for posting this question, because I had exactly the same question. I had the impression that the "fat ass" theory somebody posted was the explanation, and judging from the other theories posted, I'm still leaning toward that explanation. It's an odd scene, though, whose logic doesn't hold, because it should be obvious whether a person is fat whether you look at their front or back, so there wasn't any reason to have her spin around, and if father Solomon weren't interested in sex, as some claim, then there still wasn't any reason to have her spin around.

reply

I think it was to further humiliate her, show his control/dominance over the villagers and just because he could.
