Yes, it is impressively big. Yes it looks good. But my god, this is one of the most boring and overrated games ever. It consists of 90% riding around listening to pointless and badly written/acted dialogue and performing mundane repetitive chores.
10% is fun, but the story is uninteresting and sometimes embarrassing and to those who claim this is proof that games can be art:please. If this were a movie it would be a 1/10. Look at games like Shadow of the colossus, that is more a piece of art than this could ever hope to be.
I really wanted to like this, but it was just impossible.
Why not proivde more detail into your views. Just stating it's repetitive (when ALL games are repetitive by the nature of what they are) and it's boring offers little insight.
Jesus died for our sins. As he's already dead...sin away.
I once worked with a girl who complained about the 'repetitiveness' of GTA, who then gleefully proclaimed she was waiting on Gran Turismo Five....
Driving around in circles isn't repetitive?
Sometimes I think the more you're allowed to do in a game, the more people complain that you have to do 'too much of the same thing'. It's an amusing, but annoying, psychological hiccup.
---- You can't know what you're talking about if you don't know what you're saying.
I found the beginning of the story unengaging and i felt nothing for the main character. The story was lacking and I thought the idea of having to just ride and listening to him talking to secondary characters was a poor choice because it made me feel even more detached and annoyed and it sucked some of the fun right out of the game since I got annoyed before I actually got the actual mission that was after the riding. Had it been possible to skip these sequences I would´ve enjoyed it a whole lot more.
I felt that many of the missions were too similar. The repetitiveness got old fast and I was rarely thrilled or impressed. I liked some of the visuals but found the narrative broken. There were plenty to do but none of it were fun. The minigames were either broken (throwing horseshoes) or just plain boring (poker, blackjack). Nothing made me want to see more of the world, I just wanted to get through it.
Sounds to me like you have two problems. One is a problem with patience, the other is a problem with attention span.
It seems to me that you're into more linear games. In which case I would suggest avoiding all open world type games and stick to mission based games. Max Payne 3 seems more like your type of Rockstar game.
I liked some of the visuals but found the narrative broken.
How is the narrative broken?
The minigames were either broken (throwing horseshoes) or just plain boring (poker, blackjack).
Horse shoes isn't broken. But I agree they do tend to be boring. So I just don't do them most of the time. You're never really forced to play the minigames so I don't see why this is a complaint.
Nothing made me want to see more of the world, I just wanted to get through it.
Okay, but again, that's personal to you. Nowhere near a universal truth.

You found this game repetitive and use Shadow of the Colossus as your rebutle? While a great game, it is the definition or repetitive. Ride around, find a giant, stab repeatadly, repeat. But there was also very little story in that game so I'm assuming that Red Dead had too much going on for you. You know, having to listen to characters and pay attention to a story.
What's next?? Something that sounds better than a cassette tape?!
shadow of collosus is so over-rated repitition at its worst! ICO was much better but yet again it was the same thing over and over again.
red dead looks vastly better but thats due to better tech. Aggro running looks lame and the control system for him is pretty lame. I remember at the time it came out think it seemed pretty good. i dont think it stands up now, got it on the psn and got bored very fast.
This is just like the OP. - Don't trash good games man, there's no point to it. I don't even believe the word overrated has any validity to it. It's just an opinion. In any case, this isn't a board for Shadow of the Colossus.
---- You can't know what you're talking about if you don't know what you're saying.
And the point was that it's just an opinion. But the fact of the matter is, the closest thing to an objective opinion in entertainment is consensus - and trust me, it doesn't follow yours.
---- You can't know what you're talking about if you don't know what you're saying.
oh and if i wanted to start a flame war? whatever that is! id post on the shadow board but hey im not..because i dont give a damn! im on the red dead board actually defending that game by giving an example of a repetative game!
Sorry dude, the game is a masterpiece. The fact you either didn't get it or weren't good enough at it to actually enjoy it doesn't mean we're sheep. Probably just refelective of some kind of impairement or disability you have. Most likely mental, possibly physical. Or maybe both?
Not to worry, you have your opinion, which people smarter than you and with better taste have tried to correct, but you just don't seem to listen or understand. Or maybe both?
I love people who hide behind the 'it's my opinion' argument like that means they're not wrong. Having an opinion means having some sort of argument to support that opinion, something to say "here's why", otherwise you're just talking out you ar5e. All you've got is random words and no clue. The game isn't boring: people with short attention spans and low IQ may 'think' that it is, but that's not the reality. The reality? The subtlety of the game is lost on some people, leading to a misunderstanding of what the game was really about. Sorry there was no gorilla throwing barrels at you from up high. Sorry no blue furry hedgehogs went whizzing by.
Short version? It's not the game that is the problem here.
Having an opinion means having some sort of argument to support that opinion
Technically that's not really true. What I find funny about people who use the 'it's just my opinion' defense, is that that's really all it is; a defense. It is basically the same thing you're saying barricade, but I'm just clarifying; a person can have an opinion, even a valid one - without knowing why. But they shouldn't engage in an argument about it, unless they can support it. Why begin a dialogue about anything that's going to end with 'well it's my opinion - so there!' really? How can you be so sure you're right if that's the best you got?
A person should only say 'it's just my opinion' directly after giving one, as a preemptive attempt to show everyone that they aren't interested in discussing it further. If it's used to *empower* the opinion somehow, then you're dealing with a straight up moron. They seem to think it works something like this:
Person 1: Global warming is a myth.
Person 2: Global Warming is not a myth.
Person 1: Here are my reasons for believing it is a myth.
Person 2: Here's scientific evidence from worldwide sources that it isn't.
Person 1: Well it's my opinion <initiate delete protocols....>
--------------------COMPLETE--------------------
Person 1: Global warming is a myth...
If their reasons were so valid in the first place, why are they throwing them out the window just to blindly declare it an opinion? And why get started anyway if that's all it took to 'win' the argument? And ironically they miss the part where person two has the same power, to declare it an opinion and dismiss all reasoning ability so.... - everyone is right? That doesn't make any sense!
I'm not sure I'm articulating this well enough, but basically. You wouldn't win any official debates with 'it's just my opinion' and nobody should be having discussions if they're all going to end that way. It renders the power of persuasion non-existent.
They say 'opinions are like a$$holes, everybody's got one,' the revised version should include 'some are $h!tt!er than others.'

for a start looks pretty, not so much these days (especially compared to red dead..but i wouldnt expect it would)
the musics good.
i have a horse which is always good.(apart from its awful control system)
from then on 'In My Opinion' the game is 6 hours of repetition (which this whole thing was about) I ride through a massive landscape (inhabitated by nothing at all) to have to climb, jump or swim (using a painfully bad control system) to reach one of the many bosses (the only thing that exists in this game are bosses) find the weak spot and kill...get dragged back to the temple, no progression of storyline (your next foe is...blah blah)continue over and over until you have done game, a slight bit of variety at the end when you change into the demon/smog thing. The game literally consists of just bosses.
The gameplay is frusturating and glitchy and the camera...oh my god does that become annoying.
throughout the whole game i could'nt care less about saving the girl...i have no connection for her (there isnt enough storyline to care) and if you do you must be over sensitive (ico was twice the expirence and so was red dead)
i heard a lot of praise for this game, sounded like my kind of game but found it lacking in all respects. I wanted more interaction with other different characters, and the environments whilst large are incredibly boring and repetitive. Nothing about this game seemed incredible and compelling
but this is my opinion!! im not trying to win any argument, red dead was called repetetive?? so i gave an example of a repetitive game (you do understand the meaning of that word) regardless of what i feel about the story, emotion or graphics...this game is basically the same thing over and over, whereas there is a lot more to do in red dead!
also your view of the game is just your opinion yet you seem to spell out your view is right?? its no more right than mine.
I take it the original poster never wanted to be a cowboy as a kid? Or even watched a cowboy movie? I thought all kids growing up watched at least 1 western, be it John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, etc.
RDR is one of the best games I've ever played. The OP is crazy
he's not crazy, he has an opinion. im sure there is games you didnt like that other people thought were awesome. go have a lie down, eh? or give your head a shake...

You may find it boring, but what does that have to do with your suggestion that it's overrated?
It consists of 90% riding around listening to pointless and badly written/acted dialogue and performing mundane repetitive chores.
Okay, the dialog is not badly written nor is it badly acted, especially considering this is a video game. You're talking *beep* Are you purposely channeling Karl Pilkington?
And in an open world game, it makes sense that you're going to spend a large portion of your time traveling around the game world.
10% is fun, but the story is uninteresting and sometimes embarrassing and to those who claim this is proof that games can be art:please. If this were a movie it would be a 1/10. Look at games like Shadow of the colossus, that is more a piece of art than this could ever hope to be.
This is all your opinion. Not fact.
This and Shadow of the Colossus are two completely different games. The fact that you're putting one up against the other suggests you have no clue what you're talking about.
I really wanted to like this, but it was just impossible.
Yep, because you seem to have a problem with open world games.

I thought this was a lot less repetitive than Far Cry 2, for example, which is a similar style game.
It's a lot less repetitive than a lot of games. While most missions involve going from one place to another then wiping out the enemy at that location, that's kind of how these kinds of games work. The thing is, you don't HAVE to kill everyone. In fact, you're sometimes rewarded for keeping a person alive. The bounty collection for example.
Other games in the third person shooter genre tend to be very strict with regards to what the player is capable of doing. This game gives the player a lot of wiggle room.
In RDR you can take your time and check out the landscape and scenery, explore the area without having to defend yourself from people who can apparently spot you a mile away regardless if you're on foot or driving.
I had a hard time getting into Farcry 2 for exactly that reason(among others). People don't generally start shooting you in this game until you're close enough to be aware of their presence.
I also like the little things you do to get money. Hunting etc.
Likewise. I don't even know how much time I've spent collecting flowers and hunting in the game. But there are days when I don't play a single mission and instead spend my entire time wandering looking for strangers I haven't found, hunting animals, collecting flowers or looking for duels.

When the Cougar attacks me, I always kill it by using hte slow-mo attack mode.
And sometimes, I survive by drinking the medicine which restores my health.
Anyway, I've recently started playing this game, and I'm the kind of person who likes to be a master at these things.
I was wondering, how do you play the horse-shoe game at the Mcfarlanes ranch, there IS none !
And when it says "Lassoo or ride the horse to capture it and bring it back to it's owner" How the F123 do you lassoo the horse ?!
How do you bring back a bounty target alive ? I tried to do this a couple of times, you shoot him in the leg/foot, you kill his horse so he can't get away, then what ? I had to keep punching him and pushing him over, I could do nothing to capture him damnit !!
Horseshoes should be there. As long as the guy you are playing is there at the time you are. As for your other problems...you have to keep playing to get the rope. Once you do, you can lasso horses and hog tie bounties and put them on the back of your horse.
