Seriously, who got redeemed? (spoilers)

John and everyone in his old gang is dead, so they're out>

And the story ends with Jack becoming the same range riding murderer that his dad did everything he could to avoid him becoming.

This is a great story, but it hurts. There is no bad guy really, just people doing what they think is right and making bad choices.

Man whoever wrote this must love Unforgiving.

Sometimes, Just Sometimes, the joke's on you.

It's called Red Dead Redemption.

Hint: Read the two remaining words in the title together

A character doesn't have to survive the story in order to be redeemed.

In the end, John has redeemed himself. By sacrificing himself in order to save his family. He's done a complete 180 from his former life with the gang.

This is a great story, but it hurts. There is no bad guy really, just people doing what they think is right and making bad choices.

And in that sense, it's brilliant and very realistic. Nobody ever sets out to be the bad guy. A story like that is always going to be more moving than some impossible to believe "true evil."

The thing with Jack is that he's only the same range riding murderer that his dad did everything he could do to avoid him becoming if you want him to be. Sure you can kill Ross, but let's face it the dude's totally got it coming. I just go around collecting bounties and doing all the stuff I didn't do as John. I like to go all Clint Eastwood as Jack.

Basically though, the moral of the story is that you can't escape your past and redemption is a lie.

The ending is also a bit weird. You go through the entire game killing guys 20 at a time like frontier Death incarnate, but you're helpless against a dozen cops even though you used to be able to kill that many before breakfast during story mode. I mean HELLOOO, I've actually taken more bullets in the game and survived than John did in that ending cutscene.

I know it had to happen, but I just didn't like that they threw out the entire game mechanic for a bittersweet ending.

That's non canon though. I mean i was killed countless times by those damn bears and cougars but that's OUR mistake as players and we are not meant to believe John could actually survive that in real life.

I really believe there is not a better ending for this story. If John had a happily ever after type life with his family he would not be redeemed and the whole theme of your past catching up with you would be wasted.
