I know everyone winges when a dog is killed in a movie, but this one seemed to be completely pointless. It wasn't played for any emotion, it didn't advance the plot, it wasn't marked with alien pharamones, and it wasn't even on-screen.
Just "Take the dog with you." 1 minute passes......and.......it's dead.
Exactly. That's the only reason I couldn't love this movie. Killing off a pet for the sake of shock value is horrible writing.
A very small scene that implied a dog died (that wasn't gross it disturbing it gratuitous) is keeping you from loving this movie?
And it did have a point. It showed that the aliens meant business and were dangerous. And I think that it worked better than it would have if they killed a kid right from the get-go. Wouldn't have fit with the tone of the movie
It should have been more graphic and explicit, instead of just off screen and implied. That would have made it more emotional. Or if the alien had killed the dog in a specific way that was important to the plot, like the fact that it grabs things by the head and mauls them about until smashing them to pieces on the floor. I would have loved to have seen that and for it to have been useful to the people in the block to fight back against the ailens.
