you lot r mad!!!!young misguided youths

I really don't understand how nobody can see the message here. This movie had very little to do with skin colour it is just representative of the part of town the director grew up in. In our inner city estates whites and blacks are just as bad as eachother. However just like America there is a more poignant black criminal community but this is not because blacks are worse it's because fifty years ago there was less opportunity for blacks and that obviously has a lasting effect.

With regards to Moses and these kids the message is not that we should sympathize with these muggers but that theyre behavior is a result of of their social situation These boys showed humility and bravery when forced into
it.
This is an example of how if the youth of today are given the support an chance to be
better people most of them can be.

And finally... NOBODY IS BORN A THUG.. it is the responsibility of the selfish irresponsible
adult that decided not to raise them correctly
not just the child themselves.

Agreed!

Amazed that so many seem to miss that the movie is - at least in part - about redemption. Moses realises that "actions have consequences", that he has to take responsibility for what he's done and try to make amends...

I didn't think the movie tried to glorify or condone their initial behaviour, but rather to put it in the context of disaffected youth. The pubescent Moses' role models are an absent uncle and a gun-toting crack dealer. He mugs and terrorises the vulnerable, then goes home alone to sleep under comic-book sheets.

If there is a message then perhaps its that we shouldn't write people off or rush to judgement, that - in the right circumstances - anyone can be capable of bravery, altruism and loyalty.

While you may be right about their being thugs as a result of their socioeconomic conditions it is simply irrelevant. I think most people realize and understand that people are not born thugs. Don't know where you are from but I've not met any people who'd say "Oh it's because they're born thugs. They're black!"

It is simply a redundant and irrelevant point. The cause behind someone's violent and murderous behavior does not make any victim of such behavior feel better about having been beaten, mugged, or killed. So the law should have no special leniency for someone when punishing such behavior. Simple fact that you have to mention socioeconomic cause behind criminal behavior suggests that these young adults are somehow redeemed because of it, or because they pick up random weapons and kill some aliens. Oh wow! People try to save their skin! Give them a medal!

I came here to post this the whole time I was watching it I kept thinking it's a social commentary of their environment, the worst kid of the lot was Moses and it showed us that he had no stable adult influence in his life, yes his crime at the beginning was horrible but he probably doesn't have a choice he needs to steal to make money for himself.
