AT LEAST FILM IT IN CEDAR RAPIDS. i don't get it. yes i am from cedar rapids and i could careless if you make fun of it. i am also happy to see such great names attached to this film (ed helms, john c. reilly, sigourney weaver, alia shawkat) i would have at least liked cedar rapids to get something out of this.
It was all set up to film in Cedar Rapids but then your State government lowered their film tax incentive. The crew picked up and moved to Michigan were they have a better tax rebate.
Yeah... Well when an audit showed that some filmmakers taking advantage of the Iowa tax credits were buying luxury cars as props for the movie, but never actually made it into the film, the state had to nix the deal for everyone. While I like the film industry in Iowa, I'm not crazy about some greedy bastards using it as an avenue for stealing from ME (as an Iowa resident).
Just like filmmakers see film piracy as stealing from them, I see improper use of tax credits as stealing from ME! Stealing is stealing, whether you're a street criminal or a film pirate or a filmmaker who already makes more money than most of us.
You are going to say it is Iowa's fault for not designing the system with more checks to keep someone from stealing??? Have you ever heard of HONESTY? If someone steals from you it is NOT your fault because you didn't make it harder to do!
I don't have a million dollars to leave on my front lawn, but I leave my car in the driveway every night. So if someone steals my car it is MY fault because I didn't put it in the garage??? Tell me where you live so I can come get your car. It will be YOUR fault.
The dishonest person is to blame for dishonesty, not the victim. Whether they are film maker or film pirate or car thief.
Uh... No. I was simply raised to be honest. "Representative of all the problems in this country?" I don't think so. I am much more suspect of one like yourself who thinks it's okay to steal if you can find a way to do it.
Locks on your car will NOT stop a theft, they only serve to slow down the dumb ones. Anything can be stolen if you just want to try hard enough to do it. Because one can find a way to do it, easy or hard, it does NOT make it right!
There have always been thieves, but fortunately there have always been honest people. It is obvious that you are one of those people from whom I need to be protecting myself. I am proud that I am honest, and since you said you would steal from me if you got the opportunity, you should be ashamed of yourself, but I doubt you will ever feel any shame at all.
Not every movie is filmed in the place its set. Its all about money.
What?? I thought Hollywood could do pretty much what they wanted. If they want a house falling off the side of a cliff or a giant 50 million dollar oceanliner mock-up to break in half and sink into the ocean then they can do it. You got Kate Winslet's boobs in one scene, and the Titanic being destroyed by an iceberg collision in the next scene. It's all about "what you want to put on the screen." I am partial to Cedar Rapids because I live near there, but don't you think they could shoot the movie in the place that is the NAME of the movie at least?
This film is a joke already. They're gonna make fun of Cedar Rapids and they haven't even been there.

Nobody STOLE anything. That would be tax fraud. It is the policy makers fault. It is someones job to find out every possible way to save and make money on something like a film production or any business really. You can't blame someone for doing their job but you can blame someone for not doing their job like the Iowa policy makers. It's just like Iowa to overlook something and then have a knee jerk reaction only to make a different problem like not having anyone want to film here.Btw Iowa tax payer here.
I'm from Waterloo, and was a little excited when I heard about this film...and then found like a number of other projects, somewhere else was substituted for Iowa.
There was some independent film made in the last 5-10 years that was shot exclusively in Canada, about some rural Iowa story. They just changed all the license plates on the vintage vehicles to Iowa license plates.
I can't help but feel most filmmakers just see Iowa as being some disgusting place with guys in overalls and hotels with no internet access, or a place to get a decent cup of coffee.

Filming in other locations other than the state or town it is located in a film is nothing new and nothing personal against the actual location. It isn’t always about money but also something as simple as the weather. They used to film almost every movie in California because it could be done cheap and the weather was always nice, but now they can’t make movies in CA as cheap as they used to so they started going to other locations. Many movies that are supposed to be filmed in the Midwest are often shot in Canada because of the landscape is very similar and much cheaper. It would be nice to see a movie about Cedar Rapids be shot at least in Iowa but many many movies are being shot in Michigan now because of the tax incentives. But like I said THIS IS NOTHING NEW!!
I've read the script. It actually doesn't make fun of Cedar Rapids much at all. All of the characters are there from out of town for an Insurance convention. The main character is from rural Wisconsin, the love interest from Nebraska iirc. So it's all these small town folks coming together to what they think as "A big city." It could be set anywhere, there was nothing in there specific to Cedar Rapids that I can remember. There are a few meth head type characters from there, except they live out in the boonies, so even they aren't from Cedar Rapids.
Walking on the street and got a flyer to see a preview. The movie unfortunately was not as good as the script. Not terrible but not great. Oh well, it was a really funny script
I got invited to a screening as well, this coming Monday. The "screening" is really a market research thing, where you fill out a questionnaire afterwards. I got invited through MovieTickets.com. I reside close to Kansas City, Missouri.
