Why such a small role for Thomas Lennon?

I think he's a incredibly talented comedic actor and I was excited when I saw him in the movie, only for him to be dead one minute later. He only got a couple of lines. I then though he would appear in a funny flashback or something, but nothing. What a waste!
Anybody know anything about this, maybe they cut out a lot of his scenes? Maybe we'll get a director's cut?

It's called a cameo.

The things you own, end up owning you.

reply

not when he's listed top ten in end credits
not when he contributes nothing
not when barely nobody recognize him
silly goose

Because he's too busy writing and appearing in all the other movies...

You think writing is easy? He's already written eight movies, and has two more currently in production. And he's appeared in many small roles like this.

but this is beyond small
he was basically a borderline extra
he contributed nothing
NOTHING
did he even get paid?

I admit I was shocked and upset that he was gone so soon...

well, that might have been the angle though
shocking audience by killing off a fairly famous comedic actor that quick
hmmm

It's been a while since I saw it, so I don't remember, but wasn't there something funny about how he died?

EDIT: Auto-erotic asphyxiation?

reply

well, yeah, he died of erotic asphyxiation
but he was so involved with the rest of the story, we could've very easily gotten some nice funny flashbacks, like : his sexual relationship with anne heche, and him bribing kurtwood smith.
there where some potential, and i wonder if they cut it out for pacing reasons...
maybe there'll be some nice dvd-extras.

I have loved Tom since his days on "The State". But he's still not recognizable enough or famous enough (despite "Reno") to be too huge. And the above poster is right - he's writing a TON. Pretty sure that's his real bread and butter - if I'm not wrong, he even co-wrote a book ABOUT screenwriting recently.

reply

Possibilities: he liked the script or the character, friend of the director or another actor, just wanted a role or some extra money.

hmmm - I thought the same exact thing about 'Hot Tub Time Machine'....
