I was a big fan of the wire and watched the whole series so i found it pretty akward when the guy was quoting omar and when he mentioned it twice on the show. It wouldn't have been that akward if he wasn't actually a cast member on the show. It was weird to me and it felt like he was trying to get fans of the show to recognize him. Did anybody else feel weird about this?
Yeah I don't think he just added it himself for recognition. It was put in as a nod to fans of the show and for comedic effect. Now how well it worked is a legitimate question..
I think it breaks some kind of universal continuum if you have a fictional character quote a fictional character from a universe where that real life actor had a part as a fictional character.
I actually thought this was one of the only funny parts of the movie. It's a ridiculously "meta" joke, and quite brave of the writers, considering how obscure "The Wire" is. Personally, I would have left it at "Indeeed", and not added the part about "doing a pretty convincing Omar", since that was more than enough to make me get the joke with the previous (and ridiculous) reference of his hobbies being "a big fan of the HBO series The Wire" (Who lists the single TV shows they like when giving a general list of hobbies?!) Although without the Wire refeerences in the trailer, I would have had NO desire to see this movie, so they got a little more demographic out of their casting choice ;)
Personally, it would have felt more weird if he would have said "SHEEEEEE-IT", because THAT would have broken some kind of space time continuity laws.
Yeah, I found it a bit odd but still liked it. I thought it was way worse in oceans whatever when they made a huge part of it hinge on Julia Roberts looking like Julia Roberts. I think he should have just dropped the line and not explained it after.
Yeah, I don't think i've actually seen more than a few minutes of the wire, even tho i hear it's good, and probably will watch it when someone buys me a box set or something. or maybe never; just hate doing the Required Reading.
It must rock, since forrest whitaker is/was in it, but it's one of those shows that has fallen through the cracks for me.
So while they may have been in a bit of spontaneous meta-casting, not everyone will get it.
Omar? It says he played State Sen. R. Clayton 'Clay' Davis on the Wire. (I've only seen a few episodes). So I thought it was a hoot when I found he WAS on the show.
