2 years between seasons?

2 years between seasons? I am really tired of these 18 or 24 month breaks between seasons on multiple shows. Why are they doing this? Poor planning?

reply

It's because the stars of the show are very busy with other projects - including major films, theatrical productions, and other television shows. Sherlock wouldn't continue to make new episodes at all if they didn't allow time for Martin and Benedict to pursue other acting opportunities.

Given that the series has been running since 2010, it seems odd to be complaining about the scheduling at this late date.

In the case of Sherlock, little projects like Doctor Strange, The Hobbit, and about 2 dozen other things just for Benedict and Martin alone) also demanded the stars' time and attention. Plus the show's creatives, Moffat and Gatiss are also working on Doctor Who. We're lucky that they've all continued to work on Sherlock, despite the demands of much more lucrative projects. IMO, the fact that they have been able to produce 4 series of the show plus a movie, speaks to extraordinary planning and commitment.

Movies are around 3 to 6 months to film. Still why 2 years? He's planning 3-4 movies before Sherlock comes back? And why not film them in the "off season" Instead of adding 2 year wait?

By 'he', I assume you mean Benedict Cumberbatch. However, he's not the only cast member to have a busy career away from Sherlock. Martin Freeman and Andrew Scott have also been busy making films and appearing in plays; Loo Brealey and Una Stubbs have also had successful stage outings over the past couple of years. Rupert Graves has filmed a couple of other TV episodes. Then there's the creatives: Mark and Steven have been very busy writing Doctor Who (and, in the case of the latter, also producing it). Scheduling for Sherlock must be a nightmare. And no, with all the best will in the world, I don't think you can expect all the cast to plan their other vehicles around the show. Much as they all love it, it's far from being their biggest money-maker.

In terms of S4, Mofftiss didn't even start writing it until the beginning of the year. No point BC et al sitting on their hands when there wasn't even a script ready.

I'd love more episodes, too, but Sherlock offers film-length episodes. We've had 10 such 'films' to RDJ's 2. Quality is worth waiting for, don't you agree?

It does feel tiring that the next season is taking so long to happen :(

It increases the eventual sense of anticlimax.

That's unfortunately true. I think that is one of the reasons - though certainly not the biggest one - series 3 fell flat for me - all the meta stuff would have been funnier if it hadn't been so long since series 2. (I think all the stuff about fangirls and such that was written into the show will also age really badly, because no one who's watching it for the first time in like 2025 when the Sherlock internet buzz is over will think that is amusing. But I guess Sherlock is "event TV" more so than something planned to have major longevity after its conclusion.)

At least after S2 they kept the interest and buzz alive by the #ibelieveinsherlock and such things, excellent viral internet publicity. There was also TONS of speculation everywhere for series 3, but it doesn't seem like fans are as interested in that anymore. This board was about 30 times more busy before series 3 than now before series 4. The "cop outs" (I personally liked the non-explanation to the Fall and the easy way out to the pool scene, but I can see why it would be frustrating to some) probably diminish the passion a bit too. It's a shame, I think Sherlock would probably have gone down as one of the greatest shows of all time if it had done a series per year and ended already. That would have been difficult since the main players involved (Cumberbatch, Freeman, Moffat and Gatiss especially) are so busy elsewhere, but since we're speculating.

Maybe its just me but the gaps don't bother me.

Me neither. I'm a big fan of Martin Freeman's work so I'm pretty happy that we get both his lovely John Watson and plenty of time for loads of other things in between, he's such a workaholic! I've also very much enjoyed Steven Moffat's era of Doctor Who so that he had time to do that too is another plus. I think the show is better as a special treat every few years.
