SNL "Sherlock"-themed promo

In case you haven't heard, Benedict Cumberbatch is hosting "Saturday Night Live" this week. A new promo released by NBC gives me hope that they'll have him do a "Sherlock" skit.

who cares?

SNL stopped being funny 25 years ago.

You have a much higher opinion of SNL than I do. I've always considered it sophomoric.

I'd never actually seen an episode before Martin did one but I found it quite interesting to watch and it absolutely underlined for me how different US humour is to British and Australian humour, I though some of the sketches were clever but not necessarily all that funny. To me anyway...

I thought it was fun watching him playing all the different characters and going back to his roots in a lot of ways as he's done a lot of comedy and several sketch shows much earlier in his career. I must say though I find his earlier sketch shows, Bruiser and World of Pub much funnier and didn't quite get why SNL is such an institution over there. Comedy really is so subjective. I don't think I'm likely to watch another episode, though if they do a Sherlock sketch I suppose it will be giffed all over the internet...

Don't use SNL as a measuring stick for American humor, most of us don't find it funny anymore. Especially after watching only one episode. Once upon a time it was funny, it's gone through ups and downs over the years and it might get funny again. But it's gotten so bad in recent years that after watching it for 20 years I just completely gave up on it. Even when it's good it can have off nights, it often depends on the host and how much they actually prepare for it. Or sometimes no matter how much they prepare it will still blow because of the writers. Some really funny people have hosted but because they didn't really prepare it sucked. And then there are people who you wouldn't think would be that great but end up being hilarious. It all just depends. The host has to be well prepared and have their heart in it, the writers have to be on top of their game, etc.
