With Momoa also on the tv series it will have stronger connection. The Rock, while very popular, is also very generic and have nothing to do with the tv series. It looks more Fast & Furious on the Beach spin-off than it's Baywatch.

The original tv show wasn't purely a comedy tho'. Going full comedy for the movie version was probably one of the factors why it ultimately failed.
