The only logical explanation is that Upton declined because she wants to put her swimsuit days behind her. Because there's no way in hell producers did not want her first and foremost.

shareI'm not doubting that. Daddario may not be playing C.J., but as Summer, she is the female lead here, so it doesn't matter that C.J. would be played by someone who isn't a better actress than her.
But C.J. would have certainly benefited more from someone familiar playing her.

Not that I care about this Baywatch movie, but it seems to me like they made a more-than-decent choice with this new CJ... Certainly *FAR* better than the mustached, chicken-legged fridge that many other morons are/were clamoring for.

Kelly Rohrbach looks great to me in the pics we have seen of her as CJ so far. It seems that since people have seen her in the Baywatch swimsuit a lot of people that were initially not impressed have reconsidered their stance. Kate isn't athletic looking enough for the part.

So the question has to be asked, if you didn't know she was playing CJ, would you think she was? Someone else suggested she's more of an Erika Eleniak than a Pam Anderson. Upton or not, there's nothing about Rohrbach that screams Pam Anderson. There's nothing unique about her that makes her stand out from the assembly line of SI swimsuit models.
Point is, if it wasn't Upton for the reasons you all dislike, why isn't it someone like Charlotte McKinney instead?
I actually think that I would have guessed CJ. But early CJ. She was always sexy but to start with she had a more natural look with flatter centre parted hair and more natural make up. She was an athletic hippy surfer girl and her look reflected that more at first. The sex bomb look built up over time as Pam had more control over her look.
Personally I think that she looks gorgeous and the fact that she is an athletic girl in real life means that she actually looks believable as a life guard. Charlotte McKinney much like Kate Upton would just look like a porn star in the Baywatch swimsuit. Plus Kelly at least studied acting before getting in to it. Maybe she was one of the few models that they auditioned that could actually deliver lines well on top of looking hot in a swinsuit. I guess we'll see.
But people remember the sex bomb Pam Anderson/CJ the most. Is it really a good idea to backtrack to the less memorable version of the character? Are most people gonna look at Kelly and feel it's reminiscent of Pam Anderson at her most desirable? Saying she's the earlier CJ and not the sex bomb CJ kinda defeats the reason she was remembered the most. And it was easier for Pam to build up that sex bomb image over time because she was on the TV show that ran for years. This is a movie, one that could end up being a one-and-done if it doesn't do well, so Kelly won't have that luxury. I assure you CJ would have benefited more being played by someone who is perceived by the public as a sex bomb. Will Kelly be perceived as the alpha hottie here what with Daddario in the female lead? Unless the intent is to downplay sex bomb CJ which puts Daddario at the forefront, but it still diminishes the point of CJ regardless.

and exactly it screams Hollywood is completely out of ideas and creativity. I mean first they remade every movie, then they ran out of movies so they started remaking tv shows like 21 jump street, now they're actually remaking the worst, most made fun of because it's so pathetic, stupid, and pointless tv show in the history of the world???!!!
one good thing about this remake is it might actually, finally end Zac Efron's career.
