I don't see the Point in turning a Drama series into a movie and then making it a stupid Comedy. 21 Jump Street was a serious Show, the movie was a bad joke, Baywatch was a serious Show, now we have to see a Comedy? Starsky & Hutch was the same. What use is it to take a Franchise and place it into a totally different genre? I think no-one would make a Cheers movie and turn it into a Drama about a bunch of alcoholics. Anyone any idea why this is done????
Lets be honest with ourselves, go back and watch Baywatch you're going to laugh at it. Might as well just turn it into a comedy. The idea of even making this into a movie is awful in and of itself.
What they might as well do is stop adapting TV shows into movies period if all they're going to do is make fun of the subject matter. These movies get awful reviews anyway, so its not like they really have the high ground.
Both Jump Street movies got great reviews. And even Starsky and Hutch got 64% on Rotten Tomatoes. Check your facts next time before making ignorant statements.
That's exactly my opinion. If I Need a parody on crime Shows I have The Naked Gun. If I want a sf spoof I can watch Galaxy Quest. So why make fun of a serious Show (no matter how laughable Baywatch was)?
The original Baywatch show might have been meant as a serious drama. But the general bad acting, especially from David Hasselhoff, Jeremy Jackson and Pamela Anderson made it laughable. As an actionshow it did'nt work either, because they didn't have the money to make it look even decent. In spite of their shameless constant productplacement in every scene of every episode of the show. This show (that I do love) was popular because of it's hot leads in bathingsuits and that was it!!
Of course most men tuned in to see Pam, I understand that, but despite bad acting and useless stories it never was officially a Comedy Show. Therefore I just don't understand why making a Comedy movie out of it.
Funny, that you mention Miami Vice. There they really missed the Point of the original in the opposite direction. Of course Baywatch is somewhat unintentionally silly but that no reason to push it into the Comedy genre.
The only way this movie could be done is if they went comedic with it. I'm glad to hear that seems to be the case. It might actually be worth watching. I was wondering if they were gonna actually try to make it serious =)
I said inherently, not intentionally. Two different words with two different meanings. And just because something wasn't intentionally campy doesn't mean it wasn't campy.
Look what the 21 Jump Street TV show was tagged with: "Genres: Crime | Drama | Mystery". And they made two critically and commercially successful comedies out of it. Why is it so hard for you to understand?
Frankly, if you're so certain a movie can easily be done in the way you insist it should be, why don't you try it yourself?
For everyone's sake, stop with the ignorance. At this point, it feels deliberate, which begs the question, why would you deliberately be ignorant?
I'm not ignorant, I just don't like to see a Comedy Version of a Drama series I used to watch. Is that so hard for you to understand without attacking me?? Just don't read my Posts, it will make your life a lot easier (you know, less to think about)
Well, it would probably make *your* life easier to stop thinking about why they're going the comedy route for this, especially considering you still don't understand why even after reasons and examples were given to you.
I get it's your opinion, but you do yourself little to no favors giving seemingly uneducated reasons to justify your opinions and also seemingly ignoring all the evidence that disproves your argument.
You could easily make a serious movie about attractive lifeguards saving lives and solving crimes. Not sure why you think it has to be a comedy?
My problem with Hollywood turning all these old shows into comedies is that the people who want to see the movies are the people who enjoyed the originals. They basically are mocking their target audience. They're saying people are stupid for ever liking a show like Charlie's Angels or 21 Jump Street or Dukes of Hazard or Baywatch. They don't take the source material seriously. Even if it looks silly now, have some respect for the source material and update it to reflect current times while staying within the intended genre.
They just did that dramatic Cheers remake, it's called Horace and Pete. I liked 21 Jump Street the movie, but your point is valid, it usually means the remake will be terrible.
