2 things I hate about most film remakes of tv show.

The 2 things I hate most about TV shows that are remade into films is that the new actors playing the part usually look nothing like the actors that played the part in the TV series. The second things is that the TV series usually has some classic theme tune that was so cool and a big part of each episode and they leave it out of the entire film.

reply

It's never really bothered me as long as they retain the essence of the original characters and roughly keep the tone at the same level.

reply

then you hated 21 jump street. with it they completely abandoned the tone and genre and look of the characters. wtf? what was the point of it? why remake a tv who into a movie and have it be completely different than the tv show?

reply

I would've done if I had watched the original 21 Jump Street. As for the changes that were ultimately made for that adaptation/transition to the big screen, it was probably needed for a wider appeal.

Don't think I've suffered the annoyance of a tv-to-film adaptation. But considering i'm nearing 30 that's probably about to change.

reply

For me it's usually because they turn the movie into some kind of lame self-parody, like CHARLIE'S ANGELS (2000) and STARSKY & HUTCH (2004). Though for MIAMI VICE (2006) it was the complete opposite, as it took itself way too seriously.

I agree about the theme songs. I hope Baywatch keeps it. The song and opening montage was one of the best parts of the show.

And here are 2 movies that refute that...

The Brady Bunch Movie (1995)
The Addams Family (1991)

One could argue that Casper (1995) and the Flintstones (1994) were also fairly faithful to the source material and tried to cast/CGI the characters to look like the original.

I understand the OP's impression, as all it takes is one or two cringe worthy remakes of your favourite childhood cartoon/tv series to make you hesitant to watch the newest reboot.
The harshest film critic in the 90's was nothing compared to the vitriolic trolling within minutes of a teaser trailer today....

Never confuse the impossible with the improbable

reply

Yes, most tv remakes do suck, but Brady Bunch and Addams Family got it right. They tend to make tv show remakes crude and unwatchable except to people that like four letter words and filth. The first Flintstones was very good.

reply

Why?

Why?

Why do people continue insisting the Jump Street movies were hated so badly? People loved those movies, even film critics. Both have mid-80s scores on Rotten Tomatoes. First one made 138 million at the domestic box office, second one made over 190 million.

reply

the people saying everyone else hated them are simply the ones who hated it and can't fathom the possibility of other people having a different opinion than their own, obviously correct one

reply

Addams Family got it right.
I guess it is the substance: The Addams Family brought along more than hip tv tropes and therefore has a certain sense of timelessness.
I doubt Baywatch brings anything along which is not 90s fashion. The only way to do something with it, is to make fun of it. People who took the show seriously will dislike that, but then again, those people obviously like *beep* shows, so one should not care about their opinion too much.

reply

The thing that bothers me the most is that they just turned it into a cheesy action comedy, the original show was very serious when it came to life guarding and covered some serious real life issues as well. And no Baywatch theme as well, the original show has one of the most iconic theme songs ever made, a song you can just start singing and still know all the lyrics! But nothing we saw of that in the trailer.

reply

Yeah.

I agree with you.

Removing the iconic Baywatch theme is a huge mistake, and I say this as someone that
isn't even a die-hard fan of the 90's show. I was a child at that time But, to this day
I still remember the epic Baywatch theme and later, I discovered the seriousness of the life savings present in the show.

Evertying that was good is going to be re-maked.

Because have run out of options...

there are still more original films being released each year than there ever have been in the history of cinema, so this type of statement doesn't actually hold any weight. It's only logical as more films/tv get released over time, there also becomes a greater pool of films/tv to make remakes/sequels to, so the number of remakes/sequels also increases each year. Consider actually watching the original films instead of dwelling on the fact that remakes exist that you aren't obligated to watch
