I thought perhaps they erred in saying cigarette ashes determined the cigarette brand in Strange Bedfellow

but I checked and apparently they can

... I can't believe I was lucky enough to find an episode I had not seen before (the aforementioned Strange Bedfellows.

I questioned the forensic capability in this episode as well.

Also, I seem to remember Columbo focusing on the chain smoking habit of the perpetrator early in the episode, something he had a propensity for.
