'For Damon Pennington, a great friend and colleague' credits dedication?

Anyone knows what the director is referring to with this? I know it's the name of Neeson's character, so it makes even less sense. Is it an in-joke? Or is it a pseudonym of a real guy who really escaped from jails and is a friend of the director?

Paul Haggis, the director, tweeted on 16 Sep 2010: "My friend Damon Pennington died yesterday No warning So young Such a great heart and brilliant mind. We are at a terrible loss without him". The film was released on 9 Nov 2010.
