Any similar movies with this feel and tone?

Hi, guys.

This may be hard to explain, so I apologize in advance if I don't do a good job of explaining what I'm looking for.

I'd like to find other movies like this. I don't mean prison escape movies, but rather movies that use music and mood to build powerful moments. Think of Boogie Nights, when Dirk and friends are sitting there with the drug dealer and Jessie's Girl is playing. Or almost any episode of the old Miami Vice TV series (even though it's very dated now).

I love a couple of scenes in this movie... when he's starring at his wall with his plan laid out, wondering if he has figured all the angles and possibilities, then again when the music is playing in the background and his GPS is saying "turn left" over and over again, and he makes the decision to go right. Those moments feel very powerful to me, and I love it in a movie. I think the music had a big part in it.

Does anyone know of movies with similar style and tone?

I can recommend No Country For Old Men - it is AS thrilling as this one (actually, much more).

I own you.

Quite a different type of movie, but it is excellent as well and I love it too. Thank you for recommending!

It's a difficult question considering no one else knows what you've seen and your knowledge of cinema. A few off the top of my head that I see as plot builders that finally peak (that any medium sized movie buff probably has seen):
Cloud Atlas (adventurous concoction of a film that is similar to a ball of yarn, where each story is a solo thread yet intertwined and connected with the entire ball.. It's like watching 6 movies for the price of one and will have you locked in for entirety while being excitedly anxious to see how it will all end and will keep you thinking long after viewing.. watching it a 2nd time is even better. Also, personally I really recommend using subtitles as it will help you notice all the fine language easter eggs hidden thru-out )
Michael Clayton (slower paced & brainy political thriller that builds weighty suspense capped off with a quick & satisfying climactic conclusion)

The Prestige (underrated gem..IMO, sly & slick 19th century magician battles with more twists than a mexican soap operal all the way thru but peaking at end)

Talented Mr Ripley (late 90's version of a great Ripley novel that showcases future cinema megastars, with each character acted & portrayed in a most optimal way.. just when you think you know whats coming next, Ripley's mastermind will keep you guessing. A real treat)

Just a few random films that popped into my head first, I better end here because I can easily keep going and get lost in the eclectic memories of great movies.

Try "Run Lola Run". The music is integral in that movie and the suspense build up is great, three times over.

I know exactly what you mean. This movie has a very special atmosphere and feel to it. In a way it's very unique, I think, so it's actually really hard to name other movies with a similiar tone, especially newer ones from around 2010 or later.

"Drive" has some powerful musical moments, too. Overall, the style is pretty similar, although grittier and more violent.
"Law abiding citizen" is not that great in a musical sense, but builds up very strong suspense. More violent than TNTD, but overall similar in style.
Which movie I found to be extremely powerful in terms of music was the late "Gravity". The Oscar was well deserved for Steven Price in this one. The moments on Shenzhou and the following scenes were one of the emotionally strongest moments I've ever witnessed on film.

Wow, I think you understand me! (Most people don't.)

I tried Drive, but it wasn't for me. For some reason, the mood and music didn't work for me like it usually does. I thought it would, but no go.

I loved Law Abiding Citizen, but you're right that it didn't use music like these other movies. I also enjoyed Gravity.

Like you said, I guess there's just not much out there like this movie. Crash, Boogie Nights, The Next Three Days... loved 'em all.

Thanks for responding with your thoughts. I enjoyed reading them.

Check out Shame...it will rock your world.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but the atmosphere in this movie reminded me of Infernal Affairs, and there's a scene in a music store very early on where music is used to set the tone - love it.

Hey, just watching this movie. Your post caught my eye, as the colour/mood/music/general atmosphere is why I like it so much.I'm always on the lookout for movies like this.
Have you seen 'Ides of March' with Gosling and Clooney? There are some great scenes where the score just plays over the top which really builds that strong feeling.

I haven't, but I will definitely check it out now. It looks like you understand me. Thanks for the recommendation!

DRIVE, CRASH, MAGNOLIA and DISCONNECT

Crash and Magnolia are dead-on for me. I didn't enjoy Drive much, but since your suggestions were 2 out of 3 for me, I just have to try Disconnect. Thank you!
