Why is this so revered?
To me it felt very cliche and full of really corny acting.
shareAt the time, it was an original movie in a year of horror sequels. Today it's cliché, but in 2013, it was nice to have a ghost story that wasn't found footage or shaky cam.
shareYou are probably right. At the time it looks like Insidious and Black Swan were the only horror movies making big splashes in creativity and grandiose. I still don't think that just because it wasn't similar to what was coming out beforehand with Saw and Paranormal Activity that it should be considered good.
You basically have a rehashing of Poltergeist without the style and without the acting. It was likely an attempt by the production studios to recapture the golden era of horror. I think their agenda is apparent and what turns me off from it. To me, it takes a step backward on what those previous films accomplished.
That's fair. Personally, I enjoyed it for what it was. I remember getting tired of the horror at the time. Horror has moments where the trends become stale and the conjuring occurred around the begging of the insidious trend and at the end of the high gore flicks. Right now, it seems like we have a mix of indie Horror, sequels, and revamps of old Series.
shareHorror is as subjective as comedy, what makes you laugh might not make me laugh. For me this hit all the right notes of creepiness. Probably my favourite Wan film so far. Hard to believe it's 10 years old already.
shareI prefer Conjuring 2, most likely because it takes place in Britain and features an already well-established ghost mystery there.
I enjoyed Conjuring 2, although not as much as the first. Probably because I already knew the Enfield Poltergeist case so well and saw how many liberties they'd taken with it! 😂
shareYou must not watch a lot of horror movies then
shareI watch more horror than anything else. Have done for over 40 years.
shareI don't think horror is as subjective as you do. There are clearly bad films and good films. A bad film is not easily defended. If someone says a movie is good because they liked it, that is the most basic, self-centered analysis of a film one can give.
Of course horror is subjective. It's all about emotional response. What upsets, disturbs, or scares one person doesn't automatically upset, disturb, or scare the next.
I'm not talking about quality of film, I'm talking about personal responses to stimuli.
The Conjuring III was worse
