Why buy this house with record low mortgage rates?

I mean seriously, with interest rates so low, you can easily afford a decent suburban house and cover your monthly payments easily. Why the hell would someone just go to the middle of nowhere and buy a house thats 200 years old and looks like crapp. Stupid producers.

reply

Not that I've seen this movie but for one thing, lots and lots and LOTS of people look for older houses and don't WANT a new one. Secondly, there are still plenty of people who can't easily just walk in and get a mortgage loan for a brand freaking new house.

Ok people look for older houses because they might have nicer features that newer ones dont, but seriously this house is a POS, and its in the middle of nowhere. You realize that banks are starting to lend again, so a household making even a combined $30k(which is two people on minimum wage)could afford a mortgage on a decent house worth around $150k. Not to mention since they are making such low salary they would be entitled to free stuff from the Obama administration like food stamps.

reply

because the suburbs are full of obnoxious people like you.

reply

It's obvious that you are a troll and I won't feed you. But one thing I will say is if you're making 30k a year, you're not making minimum wage. I make $9.50 an hour and brought home 19,000 dollars last year.

reply

Not really sure what I said that makes me a troll, I am making a legitimate point that producers need to change their genre of horror, if you call that trolling then your not bright. Also please refer to the fact I said "household", which means both members would have to be working to get to that.

hey troll: house·hold

A house and its occupants regarded as a unit: "the whole household was asleep".
The affairs related to keeping a house: "it is mostly women who run households".

Does it state two people need to be working, so just shut the f'k up

What?!?! Hahaha you really are stupid, you basically just agreed with my point. Household income means entire household income. HAHAHA, lol you dumba**, thanks for the laugh.

""household", which means both members would have to be working to get to that."

Yo wake up fool and realize what you dribble out, you stated in a household both parents HAVE to work, The DEFINITION of household has absolutely NOTHING to do with the number of people working, are you f'ked in the head to the degree that you can't comprehend your own blatant stupidity when it's right here in front a yo face.

As to your original post title, how much do you think a prison guard makes? It's no where even close to support a family in any suburb. He takes home at most 20k a year after taxes & insurance deductions. You obviously live with your mommy still because you completely lack life experience and from what you have ALREADY said there isn't a chance in hell that you can talk your way out of the enormous hole you are firmly in.

Ok and you do realize that with such a low income, they would be entitled to benefits such as food stamps, free medical, and other items. So basically he would still have 15k left over and thats enough to buy a moderate house ($150k) in an ok town in georgia and only have pay $8k-10k for mortgage payments a year.

reply

Well in Pennsylvania if your GROSS income(the number they count) is say 28k/year, they are not going to give you free medical or food stamps or ANY other items. Even a single working mother wouldn't qualify for that. You think taking home 20k after every single one of life's expenses you will have 15k left? Phew, I give up I stated my view, which is based on fact from my own life & friends and family. Does everyone you know collect welfare by the way, drive Escalades. I'll take a gigantic leap and guess your race, but keep it to myself for risk of sounding racist.

You can guess my race all you want, and I don't know anybody getting welfare. By the way I have a salary and make more than $80k a year. I just bought a house and trust me, my salary is nothing great, but I was able to buy a very nice house for small monthly payments due to low rates. I watched this movie and I know they got the house from a bank. Obviously its hard to guess how much money one prison guard makes, but I can see part of your point. My assumption regarding government benefits was that people making less than $25k were pretty much covered for most things.

reply

Here are some of the sad truths. The government has set the poverty level currently at $867/month which comes out to $10,400/annually for a single person, this is straight off a document in front of me. Even worse the level for 2 people(married couple) is $1,167/month or $14,000/annually, if you make over that you get little to nothing from the government. This information was in a packet of forms for I got when I was applying for a subsidy to cover $500 of monthly medical costs that were cut off from me on Jan 1 of this year because our friendly government raised my disability up $1 over the limit for my particular program. When you consider those numbers you can see what I'm driving at. There are millions & millions of other people that just assume how low the low end really is, not having any idea what poverty really is. In my county a prison guard makes about $15 dollars an hour. Which couldn't EVEN pay for a crappy house in Georgia if he was single Without a kid. Sad facts, but they are facts

Wow, so basically the people qualifying for food stamps are actually barely surviving. I heard stories of people milking the system by getting food stamps and other government benefits, but I guess those cases are rare.

reply

I think most of the people milking the system that you here people talk about usually have a decent drug income coming in from either them or someone living with them(likely a guy that isn't listed on their welfare paperwork, multiple kids with multiple fathers living in project housing with expensive new cars in other people's names & such, but mostly the people that are milking the system are still in basic poverty, not working & getting all the benefits for free, they think they are hustling something but in reality they are still poor. Not working would probably be the number one way to manipulate the system. I know a young girl with 3 kids that is working a $9/hour full time job and she was disqualified from certain programs one being cash she was receiving and she wasn't getting reimbursed with enough money from welfare to pay for proper babysitting, the system is flawed and the people that do go out & work actually end up behind those that don't. So in a sense you are right about that there is people milking the system, but in certain cases it's necessary to survive. If that makes any sense.

Essentially, the government is subsidizing wages so that large companies (wal-mart, mcdonalds, and the like) don't have to turn over any more of their profits to their employees. Sad truth.

Your assumptions are based on TODAY'S financial environment. The film is set in 1993. Not today. Back in '93, it was a sellers market, mortgage rates were higher, etc. Yes today 2 people working full time on minimum wage (which most employers will not allow by the way), might be able to afford a mortgage on a house valued at less than 100k. Certainly not 150k as you suggest. But back in 1993? Not a chance in hell. Mortgage rates were much higher then and minimum wage was lower. So yes it makes perfect sense that they had to buy a *beep* hole.

reply

Because they purchased the house in 1993 when it was a seller's market. The prices of houses in the suburbs were extremely expensive and they probably couldn't afford one. Wasn't this also during the great migration to Georgia when everyone was moving there because of the supposed "great opportunities"?

reply

Perhaps because they dont want to be in debt for 40 years and get thier house taken away during the next recession?
a better question is why would anyone want to live in a middle of nowhere. i mean the kid is bound to grow up traumatized having 0 friends around, and lets not forget the problem of schooling.

I "grew up in the middle of nowhere" and don't feel traumatized, including my five sisters and one brother. In fact, I really miss it! Long bike rides in the woods, playing at the creek, and it was sooo QUIET. Now I live in the suburbs, with emergency vehicles driving past several times a day, loud neighbors, and here everyone feels they should have large (barking all day) dogs in their postage stamp-sized back yards.

As far as school, the bus showed up at 6:30am and we had to be in class at 8am, so school was not a problem. I sure do miss those days.
