Celia + Skeeter

Why did Celia and skeeter never meet/interact? I find it weird, also in the book they never cross paths which is a shame because I feel like they would've been great friends and a great company to each other

They were on different paths. Celia was consumed with making appearances, fitting in with the connected and pretentious women in the town, and pretending to be a perfect housewife for her husband. Skeeter had a totally different agenda, which was writing a book, going through all the leg work to make sure the maids voices were heard, and developing a writing career. She could care less about what people thought and was very independent.

They may have been friends on some level, but I don't see that they would have that much in common. In fact, during the charity event where drunk Celia is making a fool out of herself, trying to impress Hillie, Skeeter is sitting there rolling her eyes.

In the book Skeeter wasn't quite so sanctimonious & did care what others thought up until close to the end. Minny had Skeeter promise she wouldn't call Celia back because Minny was working for C at the time in secret and M didn't want the tangled web to get more tangled. She was already worried about Hilly finding out. Also, at the time, Skeeter was still friends with the bridge and Junior League women and busy with that part of her life in addition to writing and her budding relationship with Stuart. It wasn't that she felt she was 'miss serious' and above Celia. Though she wasn't in the movie, I think LouAnne and Celia would have made excellent friends. Celia had her ordeal with miscarriages and not fitting in and LouAnne dealt with depression and suicide attempts. I think they could have connected on a deep friendship level.

As far as C wanting to seem like the perfect housewife, she wanted to try to prove herself to Johnny though she didn't need to. He loved her regardless, but since they married due to her pregnancy and are definitely from different social classes she wanted him to feel she was 'worth the trouble' of marrying. I'm sure his parents had issues with them marrying and may have given them hassle as well as them being outcasts.

Celia was interested in having kids and trying to fit in. Skeeter was realizing that she (Skeeter) did not fit in and could not stay. There would have been little the two women could have bonded over.

At the event, Skeeter was not rolling her eyes at Celia, she was just shocked/concerned that this was happening. Compared to the others who were hostile she kept her cool and did not approach Celia about anything. She did not tell her off.

In the beginning, Minny told skeeter she had better never ever call Celia back, as she didn't want hilly to know she was working for Celia. For her own job security as well as Abilenes, because abilene lied and told Celia that Elizabeth recommended Minny.

Closer to the end, Minny told skeeter to try and become friends with her because Celia was doing her best to get hilly and the other to come over, in which case the secret would be blown.
