The movie is brilliant... But Isn't that weird??

I was watching "The Help" again yesterday and something came through my mind:

The white women did not accept such things like maids using the same bathroom as them or even use the same silverware, etc. That being said, it seems like they (the white ones) wanted no "human contact" at all with the ladies, right?

...So, how do we explain the fact that they would let their babies (which normally mothers consider their most precious gift)be with the maids and EVEN be raised by them as if they were their children? Does that make sense?

I guess even if a mother didn't want to "take care" of her baby (which requires a huge effort and a lot of patience and work) considering the level of "prejudice" they were showing in the scenes, they wouldn't let their babies be with the colored ladies. Am I alone here?

reply

Racism will never make sense that way.

reply

Why do you say that?

reply

Because what is logical about letting people of color raise your children yet make sure they don't touch anything?

I think the point was that young, ignorant ladies of this time had children for the sake of leading a "perfect" little life with a complete family. They weren't prepared to deal with the reality of looking after them, however. You see this clearly in the book with poor Mae Mobley. Aibleen even goes as far as suggesting that Mae Mobley will be exactly the same herself when she grows up, despite how close she is to Aibleen, as it's just the way the majority of young white women were then.

I don't know if that was the reality, but that's what the book seemed to suggest.

It makes no sense. It never will. Sipsey (Cicely Tyson) said it best in Fried Green Tomatoes.

Black women used to nurse white babies back in slave days. A lot of YTs were just trifling back then.

It seriously made absolutely no sense that they will let them prepare their food, take care of their kids but be disgusted by the help. What the hell kind of retarded thinking was that?

So it was okay for them to touch what they eat, but they couldn't use their bathrooms for fear of disease? like, seriously wtf?

One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.

Agreed, it never made any sense whatsoever.

Racism is stupid pure and simple. So, I see it as back then, whites who treated folks that way, were well, stupid pure and simple!

But yet blacks are supposed to be inferior? Meaning, I realize and believe that (whites who are filled with ignorance) notice I did not say All whites, are just very insecure and pretty stupid folks who, in order to feel good about themselves, must make others feel worse about themselves! Hope this makes senses as I SMH at racism!

I see it as a class issue. Those of the upper classes were fine to let others do the nitty-gritty work of raising kids so they needn't soil their dainty fingers. The British were like this, looked down on the "help" though the racism was not so raw as we had here in the U.S. 1960s. What was important was maintaining superiority of station in life and circumstance.

In the early 1950s, I was for a few years when I was 3 to 6 years old, cared for by a very young black woman. In this case class was not an issue, my mother was no longer with a husband but taught high school and Frannie cared for me while she was gone. I loved and adored her. Frannie lived with us intimately, slept in the same house, ate at the same table and, of course, shared the plumbing. I was bereft and unconsolable when she later had to leave.

Trivial maybe, but I found it odd that they provided a separate bathroom for the maid because of the purported threat of disease but did not provide a sink for the maid to wash her hands after using. So much for hygiene.

goes to show how ignorant folks were back then! and well, some are still that way today but I digress LOL

Well,I wipe my thingy with toilet paper. I don't need to wash my hands. Actually, most of the time, when I am outside, I wash them before going to the loo.

reply

First, that is disgusting! and second You should always wash Your hands after wiping Your rear, because ultimately Your hands still collect filthy particles. That is just basic hygiene.

reply

Oh dear ! I was talking of spending a penny not having a poo !

reply

I read somewhere that the bacteria from feces can work its way through ten layers of toilet paper. If washing your hands is too much of a chore, perhaps you should use towels.

 yea, I wouldn't want to eat their food; I'd say, this food is tainted b/c NONE of you people in that house wash your hands!

Racism doesn't make sense; that's the fundamental principle of it!
